Module 1: Introduction to the concept of” design”
Introduction
Architect are problem solvers!
“Architects is concerned with the implementation of a solution to a practical problem. A
scientist may ask "why?" and proceed to research the answer to the question. By contrast,
architects want to know how to solve a problem and how to implement that solution and
conceptualized things. In other words, scientists investigate phenomena, whereas architects
create solutions to problems or improve upon existing solutions. A scientist builds in order to
learn. An architect learns in order to build.”
In the broadest sense, an architectural concept is a device that integrates program, site,
and other factors toward the creation of a functional or symbolic theme in support of an
emerging design. “Parti” is a term frequently used in jargon-laden dialogue, and is essentially
interchangeable with “concept” It refers to the essential formative scheme, idea or basic
organizing principle of a building design. The cliché: The whole is greater than the sum of its
parts” is another way to describe the role of an architectural concept. This notion can be viewed
as a construct that supports the assembly of disparate elements into some magical building
composition.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of module (unit) 1, you should have achieved the following topic learning outcomes:
1. Express their own capabilities on making concepts and Generate design concepts through
the process of exploring various sources and abstracting ideas.
2. Relate the idea of the individual “self” and the body to space and its experiential
qualities.
3. Utilize a process-oriented approach involving sketching and creating ideas.
Preassessment:
Instruction: Answer the questionnaire based on your personal and honest views as there are no
wrong answers. Please answer briefly.
1. When were you exposed to the word Sign and Symbol how would you differentiate
them?
2. In your own perspective what does it means Concept?
