Computer Maintenance Planning
1
M
aintenance refers to the actions approved to retain an item in or restore it
to an satisfactory condition either Planned which is divided into
Preventive and Corrective Maintenance or Unplanned. Preventive
maintenance is maintenance, including tests, measurements, adjustments, and
parts replacement, performed specifically to prevent faults from occurring.
Corrective maintenance can be defined as a maintenance task completed to
identify, isolate, and rectify a fault so that the failed equipment, machine, can be
restored to a good working condition within the tolerances or limits established for
in-service operations.
What’s In
Let us see if you still remember the previous module you have completed. Fill out
the table below by supplying the differences of the two. One is done for your guide.
Give at least five (5) differences. Use a separate sheet in answering this table.
You will be graded based on the following rubrics. You will get a highest possible
score of 15 points for this activity.
Now that you have reviewed our past competency about Performing tests,
documentation and deployment procedures in Windows Server and Windows 7
comptuers, You are now ready for the next lesson. Turn to the next page to know
what to do next after completing the core competencies 1 to 3. This will employ you
the skills in computer system and networks maintenance.
What’s New
Maintenance Planning
Direction. Assume that you are an owner of a computer shop. Your task is to create
a maintenance plan to provide security and long-life for your computer systems.
Enumerate your steps clearly in planning. Do this in another sheet of pad paper.
This activity plan will help you decide on what to do in the first stage of
maintaining and repairing computer systems and networks.
How will you describe your plan? Is it complete and comprehensive? What do you
think is lacking? How will you compare your plan to the plan presented below?
A plan is a method of achieving something that you have to work out in detail
before going through the maintenance process.
Some terms to ponder on that you will be able to use throughout this module:

<Plan= is a three-step process. The first step is the identification of the problem.
The second step is analysis of the problem. The third step is the development of an
experiment to test it. Some of the things to consider during this process includes:
1. Problem Identification
2. Problem Analysis
2.1 What is the requisite information needed to fully understand the
problem and its root cause?
2.2 What data do we already have related to the problem? What data do
we need to collect?
2.3 Who should be enlisted or interviewed to better understand the
problem?
2.4 After understanding the problem, is it feasible to solve it? Will the
solution be economical and practical?
3. Developing an Experiment
3.1 What are some viable solutions?
3.2 Who will be involved in the process and who will be responsible for
it?
3.3 What is the expected outcome of the experiment and how can we
measure performance?
B. Do
The <Do= stage is where we test the proposed solutions or changes. Ideally,
this should be carried out on small-scale studies. Small-scale experiments allow us
to learn quickly, adjust as needed, and are typically less expensive to undertake.
12
Make sure that you measure the performance and collect the data necessary to
make an evaluation later.

Figure 2. 5S Process
Seiri
The first step of the "5S" process, Seiri, refers to the act of throwing away all
unwanted, unnecessary, and unrelated materials in the workplace. People
involved in Seiri must not feel sorry about having to throw away things. The
idea is to ensure that everything left in the workplace is related to work.
Even the number of necessary items in the workplace must be kept to its
absolute minimum. Because of Seiri, simplification of tasks, effective use of
space, and careful purchase of items follow.

13
Seiso
Seiso, the third step in "5S", says that 'everyone is a janitor.' Seiso consists
of cleaning up the workplace and giving it a 'shine'. Cleaning must be done
by everyone in the organization, from operators to managers. It would be a
good idea to have every area of the workplace assigned to a person or group
of persons for cleaning. No area should be left uncleaned. Everyone should
see the 'workplace' through the eyes of a visitor - always thinking if it is
clean enough to make a good impression.

C. Check
In this stage, review the experiment, analyze the results, and identify what
you have learned. Consider the following questions:
14
D. Act
In this stage, act based on what you learned in the study. If the change did
not work, go through the cycle again with a different plan. If you were successful,
incorporate what you have learned from the test into wider changes. Use what you
have learned to plan new improvements and start the cycle again. If your plan
worked, you would need to standardize the process and implement it across the
business.
During this phase of the PDCA cycle, you should ask the following questions:
This cycle can help you as a learner and future Information Technology (IT)
professional in making successful planning and decisions in the workplace. This
cycle also provides a framework for the application of improvement methods
and tools. And lastly, this allows plans to adapt as learning occurs which
enable a person to empower himself/herself to take necessary actions.
What’s More
15
In the above identified hazards/ risks that you have identified, this time we will
make an OHS policy of your own to avoid such accidents or injuries in the
workplace. Select at least six of them which are related to the competencies of
Computer System Servicing NC-II. Write your answers on a different sheet of paper
by using this graphic organizer.
OHS POLICIES
1. ________________________________________________________
2. ________________________________________________________
3. ________________________________________________________
4. ________________________________________________________
5. ________________________________________________________
6. ________________________________________________________
With these policies at hand, now you are ready for the next activity. Try to
remember these policies in every action you would take in the workplace. Read and
answer the next activity made for you.
16
5.
The template above will be of use for you as you perform computer system and
networks maintenance, this will serve as a guide in performing such task. Keep this
at hand for future reference.
Grading Rubrics
17
Complete the table by classifying the following equipment and accessories, tools
and materials. Use a separate sheet in answering this activity.
18
The tools, materials and equipment above are those you have used in the previous
modules and will be using all throughout the next modules. Proper categorizing of
these tools, materials and equipment can help you observe the correct maintenance
procedures per item. Every category needs a different storage and plan of
maintenance procedure to keep them in good working condition.
With the above activity on categorizing the tools, equipment and materials, this
assessment will help you understand clearly how to use them. Complete the table
below on how to utilize the following tools and equipment. Name the image in the
second column. Use a separate sheet for this activity.
19
Aftery you have finished doing the assessment you can check your answers at the
back portion of these module, so that you can evaluate yourself if you are working
on the right track. Please try to remember these materials and tools that are
needed in planning maintenance procedures. These will help you a lot in
performing such task.
20
I have learned things about maintenance planning and I can fill out the words as a
generalization of my learning.
These are:
