REFLECTIVE WRITING: PERSONAL LEARNING EXPERIENCES
Work in library administration and information centre organisation are the primary goals
of this course. Through a variety of teaching methods and assessment tools, the programme
equips participants with marketable skills in areas such as management, information and
communication technology (ICT), information literacy, information storage, processing, and
retrieval both manual and automated methods. Library Management (IM120) is the official title
of this course. Many students, it seems, mistakenly assumed that we would merely be learning
how to organise shelves with books and attend to the needs of users. It actually went farther
than that, though as we went deeper exploring this course. This programme runs two years
and consists of four semesters. During my first semester, I was forced to remain at home due
to the global spread of the Covid-19 pandemic. So, I entered college in second semester.
Library Management (IM120) is meant to meet the needs of users based on what we
know about the services provided and what we have learned about it in this programme.
Reference and Information Services for Information Agencies (IMD312) is what I am learning
for this semester. They teach students how to get and use information, as well as other skills
and facts. I indirectly get the chance to work in the library and information centre field by taking
this programme. Because of its role plays in making sure library users have access to
information, I think this service is crucial. My understanding is that reference librarians also
teach new users in the proper use of library materials and the construction of effective search
method. These are some of the classes that I need to take, and each one is important in its
own way.
Each class that I take throughout the semester gives me an assignment that requires
searching methods and studying articles. I have to do this for every class that I take. I need to
look for a certain article that matches the title that was provided. After then, I need to study
those articles and have a good grasp on the subject matter so that it would be simple for me
to review them. It is sufficient to search any necessary articles using the university's provided
online databases in order to accomplish this assignment. My lecturer during the first semester
taught me on how to do searches using this strategy. There is a wide variety of approaches
that one might use in order to look for the required information. As an example, I will use
keywords rather than whole sentences or phrases. In addition to that, a Boolean search is
something that was covered in class earlier in the semester by my lecturer. In general, this
method has been quite helpful for myself and other students in our quest for certain information
that was required. Nevertheless, not all of the results I got are an exact match to what it is that
I wanted them to be. When I am searching for any articles to use for my assignment, there are
times when I come across this kind of problem. Since I am in my final semester, I am prepared
5
to encounter and resolve such issues when searching any information on online databases or
any search engines. In the long run, this will be helpful for me.
Because of what I learned in this class, I am now able to differentiate between various
types of reference materials, such as dictionaries and encyclopaedias. Thanks to what I
learned in this class. In later years, criteria were established to be used in evaluating the
overall quality of reference books such as dictionaries and encyclopaedias. This area provides
access to a wide variety of resources, including human sources, archives, and libraries. I could
also pick up some fresh information about the librarian profession. The three primary parts of
library work that librarians specialise in technical services, user services, and administrative
services. The day-to-day responsibilities of librarians include, but are not limited to, providing
reading recommendations to customers, analysing collections, and compiling bibliographies
of relevant print, online, and other types of media sources. For me, it is quite important to
differentiate these two in order to get the precise information without any problems arise.
One of the third semester subject I took, Cataloging and Classification 1 (IML202), was
particularly difficult at first since I had no idea how to put this areas into practice. At the end, I
am able to use what I have been taught to answer the exercises problems posed by my
lecturer and I experience a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction that comes from having
achieved this on my own. I did so many exercises provided by my lecturer so that I could
master those eight areas. The lecturer also told that we need to purchase an Anglo-American
Cataloguing Rules (AACR) book as our reference in her class. She provided us with several
tasks and slides for each subject we studied to make us more understand about this subject.
I can now catalog each if the library's collection easily. For instance, I am familiar with the
eight fields required to fully catalog a book, pamphlet, or printed sheet. The punctuation mark,
which plays a significant function in categorizing itself. If there is no any punctuation in catalog
it will be difficult to recognize the eight areas. Because cataloguing is very important to any
information agency, especially libraries, those of us who are interested in working at the library
or other information institutions should be familiar with this topic.
In conclusion, if a student must understand the significance of each subjects within this
program. I learned a great deal of new information that I can use in the future. As a result of
completing this program's training subject, I can now access information more quickly and
precisely. On the other side, I can finally understand that Library Management assists students
become more adapt at both provide services and retrieving information. I gained a lot of
knowledge from first semester.
