SECTION-I

1 (a) Distinguish between pipe flow and open channel flow ,


(b) Discuss the classification of flows in open channels.

2. (a) Differentiate between pipe flow and open channel flow ,

(b) Derive the expression for kinetic energy correction factor.

SECTION-n

3 (a) What do you understand by economic cross-section in open channel flow.


Show for an economic trapezoidal channel that half of top width is equal to
one slanting side.
(b) A circular channel running half full carries a discharge of 1 m 3 /s in a bed slope
of 1 in 10,000. Find the diameter of the channel if Manning’ s n = 0.02.

4 (a) A lined channel (n= 0.014) is of trapezoidal section with one side vertical and
other on a side slope 1.5 H : 1 V. If the Channel is to deliver 9m /sec when
laid on a slope of 0.0002, calculate the dimension of the efficient section which
require minimum lining.
(b) Prove that the condition for maximum discharge through a circular channel of
most economical section is,

Hydraulic radius R=0.29 Diameter of circular channel .

5 (a) What is specific energy curve? Draw specific energy curve, and then derive
expressions for critical depth and critical velocity.

6 (a) Define critical velocity and critical depth . Derive an expression for minimum
specific energy in terms of critical depth.

( b) A rectangular channel is 2.5 m wide and carries a flow of 2.75 m /sec at a


depth of 0.9m . A contraction of the channel width is proposed at a certain
section. Find the smallest allowable contracted width that will not affect the
upstream flow conditions.

7 (a) Write a brief note on the control sections.


(b) Find out the length of back water curve caused by an afflux of 1.5 m in a
rectangular channel of 50 m wide and 2 m deep. Take channel bed slope
=5x1O 4 and Manning constant =0.03.

8 (a) Explain briefly direct step method.


(b) A rectangular channel 7.5 m wide has a uniform depth of flow of 2 m and has
a bed slope of 1 in 3000. If due to weir constructed at the downstream end of
the channel, water surface at a section is raised by 0.75 m, determine the water
surface slope with respect to horizontal at this section . Assume Manning’ s
r] = 0.02.

SECTION-V

9 (a) Define the hydraulic jump and explain under what circumstances, it occurs.
(b) Water flowing through a rectangular channel is 1.6 m wide and carrying
1 m /s. Hydraulic jump occurs at a section where upstream depth is 2.5 cm.
Find the rise in water level (h2-hi ) due to jump.

10 (a) Distinguish between Positive surge and Negative surge. A rectangular


channel carries a flow with a velocity of 0.65 m/sec and depth of 1.4 m . If the
discharge is abruptly increased three fold by a sudden lifting of a gate on the
upstream, estimate the velocity and height of resulting surge.
(b) Write down the procedure for estimating the location of hydraulic jump.

SECTION - I

1 Discuss in detail about the various types of loads and their combination
effect on the
steel structures.

2 A tie member consisting of an ISA 80 mm x 50 mm x 8 mm (Fe


410 grade steel) is
welded to a 12 mm thick gusset plate at site. Design welds to transm
it load equal to
the design strength of the member .

SECTION - II

3 Design a double angle tension member connected on each side


of a 10 mm thick
gusset plate, to carry an axial factored load of 375 kN . Use
20 mm black bolts.
Assume shop connection.

4 A column section ISHB 300 @ 577 N/m is carrying a factored


axial load of 600 kN,
a factored moment of 30 N-m and a factored shear force of 60 kN
. Design a suitable
column splice. Assume ends are milled.

SECTION - III
5 A simply supported steel joist of 4.0 m effective span
is laterally supported
throughout. It carries a total uniformly distributed load of
40 kN (inclusive of self-
weight). Design an appropriate section using steel of grade Fe
410.
6 A beam of span 5 m carrying a load of 20 kN/m on the left
half and - concentrated load
of 50 kN at the quarter span on the right half. Design
the beam assuming that it is
laterally supported along its length.
SECTION - IV

7 An ISMB 500 section is used as a beam over a span of 6 m, with simply supported
ends. Determine the maximum factored uniformly distributed load that the beam can
carry if the ends are restrained against torsion but compression flange is laterally
unsupported.

8 Design a simply supported gantry girder to carry an electric overhead travelling crane
for the following data:
Crane capacity = 320 kN . Weight of the crane and crab = 300 kN .
Weight of the crane = 200 kN. Minimum approach of crane hook = 1.2 m.
Distance between centre to centre of wheels = 3.2 m.
Distance between centre to centre of gantries = 16.0 m .
Span of gantry girder = 4.0 m.
Weight of rails = 300 N/m. Height of rails = 75 mm .

SECTION - V

9 Design a suitable slab base for a column section ISHB 200 @ 365.9 N/m supporting
an axial load of 400 kN. The base plate is to rest on a concrete pedestal of M20
grade.

10 Design a two tier grillage foundation for a column carrying 2000 kN load. The size of
base plate is 800 x 800 mm. Safe bearing capacity of the soil is 200 kN/m .

SECTION - I

1 Design a rectangular beam for an effective span of 6m. The superimposed load
80kN/m and size of the beam is limited to 30cm x 70cm. Use M20 mix and Fe415
grade steel

2 A rectangular RC beam of 250mm wide and 400 mm effective depth. If it has 2-


#16mm HYSD bars in compression at an effective cover of 40mm and
4-#20mm HYSD bars in tension. Determine the Ultimate moment of resistance. Use
M20 concrete and Fe415 steel.

SECTION - II
3 Design a rectangular beam section, 300 mm wide and 550 mm deep (overall),
subjected to an ultimate twisting moment of 25 kN-m, combined with an ultimate
bending moment of 60 kN-m and an ultimate shear force of 50 kN. Assume M20
concrete, moderate exposure conditions and Fe415 steel.

4 Design a simply supported slab to cover a room with internal dimensions 4m x 5.0 m
and 230 mm thick brick walls all round. Assume a live load of 3kN/m2 and finish

load of 1 kN/m . Use M20 grade of concrete and Fe 415 steel. Assume that the slab
comers are free to lift up. Assume mild exposure conditions

SECTION - III

5 Design a short circular column with helical reinforcement when a 6m long column
carrying a factored axial load of 1000 kN. If both the ends are fully restrained.
Assume M30 grade concrete and 500 grade HYSD steel. Use effective cover as 60
mm .

6 Design a slender braced circular column under Uniaxial bending with the following
details:
Size of column = 500 mm, Concrete grade = M30,
Steel grade 500 HYSD, Effective length of column = 5m , Unsupported length = 6 m,
Factored load = 1000 kN, factored moment at top and bottom are 70 kN-m and 45
kN-m. Assume the column is bent in single curvature.
SECTION - IV

7 A square column of size 400mm carries a service load of 1000KN. Design an

isolated footing for the column if the safe bearing capacity of the soil is 230 kN/m .
Use M20 grade of concrete and Fe415 steel.

8 Design a suitable footing for a R.C. column of size 300x450mm . Supporting a


factored axial load of 1200KN. Assume safe bearing capacity of soil as 200KN/m .
Adopt M20 grade of concrete and Fe415 steel. Sketch the reinforcement details in
footings.

SECTION - V

9 Design a waist slab type dog legged staircase for an office building using the
following data:
Height between floors=3.2m
Tread=270mm and riser=160mm
Width of flight = landing width=1.25m
The stairs are supported on 300mm load bearing masonry walls at the outer edges of
the landing, parallel to the risers.
Materials: M20 grade concrete and Fe415 HYSD bars.

10 A rectangular Cantilever beam of 5m span is 350mm x 650mm cross section.


Bending moment at the support due to UDL is 150kN-m out of which 50% moment
is due to permanent load. Check the beam for deflection. It carries 3-#25mm
diameter bars in tension at an effective cover of 50mm. Use M20 grade of concrete
andFe415 steel.

1. A beam of uniform section is 10 m long and is simply supported at the ends. It


carries concentrated loads of 100 kN and 60kN at distances of 2 m and 5 m
respectively from the left end . Calculate the deflection under each load. Also

2. (a) Derive the relationships between the curvature, slope and deflection of the beam.
(b) A cantilever is loaded with an u .d. l. of intensity w/m throughout its length. Calculate

SECTION - III

5. A cantilever of length ‘1’ is loaded with an u. d. l. of w per unit length over the whole
span. It is propped at the free end. If the prop is rigid, Calculate the prop reaction
and draw SFD and BMD.

6. A fixed beam of 6 meters span supports two point loads of 300 kN each at 2 meters
from each end. Determine the fixed end moments and draw the S.F. and
B . M. diagrams. Also, determine the central deflection . Take 1 = 9 x 1 0 mm and

SECTION - IV

7. A Continuous beam ABCD, 20m long is rested on supports at its ends and is
propped at the same level at points 5m and 12m from left end A. It carries two
concentrated loads of 80KN and 50KN at 2m and 9m respectively from end A and an
u.d. l. of lOKN/m over the span CD. Analyse the beam and draw SFD and BMD.

8. A continuous beam ABC consists of spans AB and BC of lengths 3 m and 4 m


respectively. The ends A and C being simply supported. If the spans AB and BC
carry uniformly distributed loads of 50 kN per metre and 80 kN per metre
respectively. Determine the support moments at A, B and C. Draw S.F. and B.M.
diagrams. The moments of inertia for the spans AB and BC are I and 21 respectively.

SECTION - V

9. Determine the vertical deflection of the load for the structure shown in the figure.
The tension members are stressed to 150 kN/mm2 and the compression members to
80 kN/mm2. All the inclined members are at 450 with the horizontal. Take E = 200
kN/mm2

SECTION - I

1 Explain in detail about DC distribution fed at both ends and AC distribution fed at
one end.

2 (a) State and prove Kelvins law for size of conductor for transmission and also mention
its limitations.
(b) A d.c. 2 wire system is to be converted into ac 3-phase 3 wire system by the addition
of a third conductor of the same size as the two existing conductors. Calculate the
percentage additional balanced load which can now be carried by the conductors at
0.95 p.f lagging with the voltage between the conductors and the same percentage
power loss.

SECTION - II

3 Derive the expression for the inductance of 3-phase line with conductors un
transposed. What is the significance of imaginary term in the expression for

inductance? Hence derive the expression for inductance for a completely transposed
line.

4 ( a) What are skin and proximity effects on transmission lines?


(b) Calculate the capacitance of a conductor per phase of a three phase 400 km long line,
with the conductors spaced at the corners of an equilateral triangle of 4m and the
diameter of each conductor being 2.5 cm .

5 (a) What is corona? What are the factors the effect corona?
(b ) A certain 3-phase equilateral transmission line has a total corona loss of 53kw at
106kv and a loss of 98kw at 110.9kv.What is the disruptive critical voltage? What is
corona loss at 113kv?
6 ( a) List out the types of insulators used for over headlines and write about suspension
type insulator.
(b ) A string of six suspension insulators is to be graded to obtain uniform distribution of
voltage across the string. If the pin -to-earth capacitances are all equal to C and the
mutual capacitance of the top insulator is IOC,Determine the mutual capacitance of
each unit interms of C.

1 (a) Describe the constructional details and working of a moving iron Repulsion type
meter. Derive its Torque equation.
( b) A PMMC instrument has a 0.12 magnetic flux density in it air gaps. The coil
dimension D=1.5cm and L=2.25cm . Determine the number of coil turns required to
give a torque of 4.5 pN-m when the coil current is 100 pA .

2 (a) Explain the construction and operation of electrostatic voltmeter with neat diagram .
(b) The inductance of a 25 A electrodynamics ammeter changes uniformly at the rate of
0.0035 mH/radian . The spring constant is 10-6N-m/radian. Determine the angular
deflection at full scale ,

SECTION - II

3 Explain how the extension of range of wattmeter is done using instrument


transformers?
Draw the schematic and derive how three-phase power consumed by a delta-
connected load can be measured by two wattmeters.

4 (a) What is meant by phantom loading? Explain about phantom loading test on energy
meter.
( b) The meter constant of a 220 V, 5 A energy meter is 2000 revolutions per kWh . The
meter is tested at half load at rated voltage and unity power factor. The meter is found
to make 34 revolutions in 116 s. Determine the meter error at half load.

5 (a) Derive expressions for the Phase angle errors of a current Transformer with a neat
phasor diagram .
(b) A 100/5A, 50 Hz current transformer has a bar primary and a rated secondary burden
of 12.5VA. The secondary winding has 196 turns and a leakage inductance of
0.96mH. With a purely resistive burden at rated full load, the magnetizing mmf is
16AT and the loss excitation required 12A. Find ratio and phase angle errors.
6 (a) Draw the schematic and explain the operation of a three phase dynamometer type PF
meter.
(b) Explain the construction and operation of resonance type frequency meter.

7 (a) Describe the steps when D.C . Crompton’ s potentiometer is used to measure an
unknown resistance?
( b) A basic slide wire potentiometer has a working battery voltage of 3 volts with
negligible internal resistance. The resistance of slide wire is 400 and its length is 200
cm. A 200 cm scale is placed along the slide wire. The slide wire has 1 mm scale
divisions and it is possible to read upto of a division . The instrument is standardized
with 1.018 V standard cell with sliding contact at the 101.8 cm mark on scale.
Calculate:
i. Working current
ii. The resistance of series rheostat

8 (a) Explain the principle and operation of coordinate type potentiometer with neat
diagram.
(b) What are the sources of errors in the above potentiometer?

9 (a) Explain the working of Kelvin double bridge. Derive the unknown
resistance
equation . A Wheatstone bridge is shown in fig. The values of resistances
are

24mV. Galvanometer current is 13.6 p.A. Calculate the value of Q.
(b) Describe with the help of diagram the loss of charge method for determin

10 (a) Describe how unknown capacitors can be measured using De Sauty’ s bridge.
What
are the limitations of this bridge and how they can be overcome by using a modified
De Sauty’ s bridge? Draw relevant phasor diagrams .
( b) Explain how Wien ’s bridge can be used for measurement of unknown frequenc
y.

1 (a) Derive the e.m .f equation of synchronous generator and also pitch factor, distribution
factors.
(b) Calculate the speed and open circuit line and phase voltages of a 4-poles, 3-phase,
pole is 0.0496Wb and is sinusoidally distributed.

2 A 500V, 50VA, 1-phase alternator has an elective resistance of 0.20. A field current
of 10A produces an armature current of 200A on short circuit and an emf of 450V on
open circuit. Calculate:
(i) Synchronous impedance and reactance
(ii) Full-load regulation with 0.8 p.f. lagging

3 (a) Explain the terms direct-axis synchronous reactance and quadrature - axis,
synchronous reactance of a salient -pole alternator. On what factors do these values
depend?
(b) Explain about power angle characteristics.

4 (a) Explain the two reaction theory of salient pole alternator ,

5 (a) Two identical 2MVA alternators operate in parallel the Governor of the 1st machine
is such that frequency drops uniformly 50 Hz on no load to 48 Hz on full load. The
corresponding uniform speed drop of the second machine is 50 Hz to 47.5Hz.
( b) Explain the effect of variation of excitation and mechanical input in case of
synchronous generator.

6 (a) With a neat diagram explain about synchronization of an alternator with infinite bus-
bars.
(b) A3 MVA, 6-Pole alternator runs at 1000 rpm in parallel with other machines
on 3.3 KV bus bars. The synchronous reactance is 20%. Calculate the synchronizing
power per one mechanical degree of displacement and the corresponding
synchronizing torque . When the alternator as supplying full load at 0.8 lag p .f.

7 ( a) The input to a 11KV, 3-phase star connected synchronous motor is 60A. The
elective resistance and synchronous reactance per phase are lfi and 30Q. Find the
power supplied to the motor and the induced emf for power factor of 0.8 leading.
(b) Explain the construction and principle of operation of synchronous motor.

8 (a) What is the method of starting of synchronous motor?


(b ) A factory takes 600KVA at a lagging power factor of 0.7. A synchronous motor is
to be installed to raise the power factor of 0.9 lagging when the motor is taking
200 KW, calculate the corresponding kilovolt amperes taken by synchronous motor
and the power factor at which the motor will be operating .

9 ( a) Explain about two-value capacitor run motor.


( b) Explain the cross field theory of a single phase induction motor.

10 A 230V, 6 pole, 50Hz, single phase induction motor has the following impedance at
standstill.
Auxiliary winding ra = 5Qx = 5Q
Main winding rm= l .5 Q xma = 4.0Q
The resistance of the rotor winding when referred to the main stator winding is 0.5Q.
Assuming the number of turns of the main winding and Auxiliary winding are equal,
estimate the resistance to be added to the auxiliary winding to obtain maximum
starting torque and also estimate the value of the maximum starting torque.
