PROJECT ABSTRACT
The mechanism that we chose for our project called dwell slider linkage, which
is about linkages connected to a slider in such a way that the motion of linkages
causes motion to the slider in a uniform motion. This type of project
(mechanism project) desires specific needs to have a good efficiency when the
project starts functioning.
Firstly, where can we use this project and who is interested in it, how the dwell
slider linkage works, what kind of mechanism this project is following, and how
does the motion transfer between the components.
Secondly, how can we specify the design of the project, and what are the
constraints we should follow, all these commitments used to achieve the
customer requirements. Our goal is to manufacture the project easily and
affordably so that we would not lose much money and to obtain the customer
requirements.
Lastly, the facilities we use to manufacture the project and specify the type of
materials in which the total cost would not be expensive for the teamwork and
the customers.
After a lot of discussion among the members to find the best methods to follow
all the instruments in making the project, the plan has been made and it will be
explained in detail in the further pages.
The dwell slider linkage mechanism is made of six linkages that work in the sink
to achieve a successful movement. The reciprocating movement of the slider
that is obtained during this process is generated by a motor that transforms
energy to the crank, subsequently, the crank movement will cause the movement
of the connecting linkages, which will eventually cause the movement of the
slider.
The energy transformed into the crank can not only be generated by a motor, it
can also be generated manually by a person rotating the crank. The manual
rotating of the crank is not practically preferred because of the loss of time and
energy which can lead to different implications some of which are not well-
liked.
The dwell slider linkage mechanism concept is used in several applications, one
of these applications is raising and lowering car windows. The mechanism
inside car windows is compact and consists of several parts but the main part is
the slider mechanism. To achieve the motion of car windows a simple crank,
gear, and slider arrangement is required, as shown in the figure below.
Figure(1)
The rotation of the crank will cause the movement of different parts of the
mechanism, the end motion will either push or pull the window. In this design of
the window we have two sliders to support the movement of the window, this is
because a small difference in friction could cause an imbalance which would
lead to a non-straight movement of the window.
The slider linkage mechanism concept is also used in other applications such as
weightlifting equipment, and folding gates and it's also used in some computer
keyboards.
DESIGN SPECIFICATION
Costumer requirements
Many factors affect the customer's opinion, these factors will play an important
role and determining if the customer will look at the project as the desired
product or not, in our project we focused on many factors such as price , quality,
Sustainability, and the Convenience.
We already know that product quality is a very important factor, and it aims to
help the customer to reach the highest level of comfort when he uses the
product, also when the product is working efficiently with the customer we call
that the product quality. In our project we have six linkages, the Friction
between any one of them will cause damage to the mechanism and may affect
the movement of the mechanism ,and as a team we know that any error in the
dimensions or in the design will cause friction between the linkages, therefore
this bad design will affect the movement of the mechanism, therefore it will
affect the quality of the product, so we put all our effort to calculate the proper
dimensions for all parts, and we have made sure when the mechanism will be
manufactured it will move properly.
Constrains
One of our major concerns is how the Dwell Slider Linkage moves. We have
decided to provide the highest amount of convenience for the customer, we have
been looking for the easiest way to move it. As a result, we have been selecting
the proper way to move the mechanism . One option is to use the manual
selections by employing some kind of handles, the second option is to use the
DC motor to move it automatically. Therefore, because the second option will
make life easier, we chose the second option.
Manufacturing Process
It was not very hard to find the parts that we needed to manufacture our project
since it is made of multiple links that are connected by using screw threads. At
first, we used a big wooden board as a background to attach the dwell slider
linkage to it.
On the wooden board, we designed two parallel holders with a specific distance
between them to help constrain the motion of the slider. The slider will be
covered with a sticky substance to reduce the effect of friction between the
slider and the holders, while the slider is reciprocating to the right and left.
We used two screw threads since we have two fixed points in the dwell slider
linkage mechanism to attach the fixed points of the dwell slider linkage to the
wooden board, and the other four-screw threads to connect the links together.
The dwell slider linkage mechanism is made of six links each of them has its
dimension and a degree of rotation, and all of them are connected, and once one
of them moves all other links will move as well.
The project is not highly expensive, since the main material used for
manufacturing is wood, and by using our relations we took some materials such
as the motor from friends for free. The Arduino was not expensive too and we
ordered it from Noon online shop, and the woods and screw threads we bought
from the carpentry workshop.
