Paired Associate Learning - Method

The document outlines a study to test the effect of meaningful vs non-meaningful stimulus-response relationships on recall. It describes the hypotheses, variables, materials, procedure, analysis plan, and expected results tables. Participants will complete recall trials with word pairs that either have or do not have meaningful relationships, and response times will be measured.

Method

Problem
To study the effect of meaningfulness of stimulus-response relationship on
the formation of associations.

Hypotheses
1. Stimulus-response meaningfulness has a positive effect on the formation of associations,
and consequently, on recall.
2. Meaningfulness of the Stimulus-Response has a positive effect on the formation of
associations and recall, even when the Stimulus - Response words are interchanged.

Plan

To conduct the experiment in PEBL in two Recall trials-

1. The number of words correctly recalled with no specific meaningful

relationship between stimuli and responses and with logical or meaningful
connections between stimuli and responses is compared.

2. The number of words correctly recalled, when the Stimulus and Response
words were interchanged will be compared.

3. The Reaction time to respond for both the recall trials is also calculated.

Variables
Independent Variables
1. Meaningfulness of Stimulus-Response connection.
2. Meaningfulness of Stimulus - Response connection when there was an
interchange of Stimulus – Response words
Dependent Variables
1. Number of response words correctly recalled.
2. Reaction time taken
Controls/Precautions

1. Time of exposure is limited to 2 seconds per pair for both lists.

2. The difficulty level of words used is held constant in both the series.

Materials
1. Computer / Laptop
2. PEBL software

Procedure

The subject is seated comfortably and rapport is established and the following
subject details are recorded: Name (Initials), Age, Sex and Education.

The Experiment is done on PEBL. The screen presents 4 different lists of S-R pair
words. Instruct the subject to observe carefully, and read the instructions on the screen
before taking the test.

PEBL presents the 1st list with 12 words for a duration of 2 seconds per pair. Then
the screen presents one word (S OR R) one by one at random along with the 12 (S or R)
words, which the Subject has to recognize the correct word associated with and click on the
word. The same procedure is done across all the 12 pairs. This is based on recognition.

Then the same list is presented and the same procedure is followed.

Recall Trial 1: A new list with 12 new pairs is presented and the Subject is asked to recall.
There is no depiction of the associated words. Instead the Subject has to recall and type
the word.

Another new list is presented and the Recognition procedure is repeated.

Recall Trial 2: Another new list is presented and the Recall procedure is repeated.

Analysis of results
1. To find out the difference between the response words correctly recalled when pairs
of words were presented with meaningful association and with no meaningful
association in both the Recall Trials.

2. Find out the difference in the number of words correctly recalled when
pairs of words were presented with Meaningful association and with no
meaningful association when the Stimulus and Response words were
interchanged in both the recall trials.

3. Calculate the Reaction time for both the conditions.

Results and Discussion

words across both the Recall Trials
