Migration from Jira Data Center to Cloud

Goals of the Migration

The primary objective of migrating from Jira Data Center to Cloud is to leverage the enhanced
capabilities offered by cloud computing which align with modern business needs and technological
advancements. The migration is aimed at achieving several key goals:

1. Scalability: The cloud environment facilitates easy scaling of resources to meet changing
demands without the need for significant upfront investments in physical infrastructure.

2. Maintenance Reduction: Shifting to Cloud reduces the burden of on-premises hardware

maintenance and software upgrades, allowing teams to focus on core business tasks.

3. Cost Efficiency: With a cloud model, organizations can move from a capital expenditure
model to an operational expenditure model, potentially lowering overall costs.

4. Enhanced Collaboration: Cloud platforms offer better collaboration tools and integration
options, which are essential for distributed teams.

5. Improved Security and Compliance: Benefit from Atlassian's investments in security,

compliance, and privacy standards in the Cloud environment.

6. Innovation and Features: Access to the latest features and innovations from Atlassian that
are frequently rolled out to Cloud platforms first.

Phases of the Migration

The migration process is structured into five distinct phases, aligning with Atlassian's recommended
best practices for a seamless and effective transition:

1. Assess Phase:

 Objective: Conduct a thorough assessment of the current Jira Data Center

environment to identify the specific needs, dependencies, and potential challenges of
migrating to the cloud.

 Activities: Inventory existing configurations, plugins, and integrations. Evaluate which

data and workflows are essential and how they will be affected during the migration.

2. Plan Phase:

 Objective: Develop a detailed migration plan that outlines the approach, resources
required, timeline, and risk management strategies.

 Activities: Define project scope, establish migration teams, set milestones, and
prepare a comprehensive communication plan to keep all stakeholders informed.

3. Prepare Phase:

 Objective: Set up the Jira Cloud environment and ensure that all prerequisites for
migration are met.

 Activities: Configure the cloud environment to mirror the critical settings of the Data
Center setup. Prepare users and teams for the change by providing training and
resources.
4. Migrate Phase:

 Objective: Execute the actual migration of data, configurations, and integrations from
Jira Data Center to Cloud.

 Activities: Perform the data migration, monitor the process for issues, and conduct
thorough testing to ensure everything functions as expected.

5. Launch Phase:

 Objective: Officially move all operations to the Jira Cloud environment and enter the
post-migration phase.

 Activities: Finalize the migration, cut over to the new system, and provide support to
address any immediate post-migration issues. Monitor system performance and user
feedback to make necessary adjustments.
