Personal data

→ the data concerning a living person who can be identified from the data itself

Examples of personal data


● Name
● Address
● Date of birth
● Banking details
Examples of sensitive personal data
● Religion
● Racial origins
● Political views
● DNA
● Biometric data
● Criminal activity
Why personal data should be confidential and secure
● As it links directly to a person
● If someone gets access to the data they can use the information to attack the person or
identity theft

Hardware and software


Hardware
→ the physical components that make up a computer system
→ can be either external or internal

External: external devices that can be seen by the user


● Mouse
● Keyboard
● Printer
● Scanner
● monitor
Internal: devices that exists in the computer and are not normally visible by the user
● Motherboard
● CPU
● Sound card
● RAM
● ROM
Software
→program that control the computer system
→ can be system or application
Application software: program that allows the user to do specific tasks
● Database
● Photo editing software
● Video editing software
● Word processor
● spreadsheet
System software: programs that allow the hardware to run properly or programs that allow the
user to communicate with the computer
● Linkers
● Operating systems
● Anti virus
● Compiler
● Device driver

TYPES OF COMPUTERS

Desktops
Advantages
● Less chance to be damaged because they are in a fixed position
● Tends to have a more powerful processor than laptops and smartphones
Disadvantages
● Not portable
● Consume more physical spaces than other types

Laptops
→ a type of computer where the monitor, keyboard, pointing device and processor are in one
single unit

Advantages
● More portable than PCs
● Consume less physical space compared to a PC
● Less power consumption compared to PC
● Uses battery power so can be used if there is a power cut
● Can be linked to multimedia systems because they are portable
● Portability allows them to take full advantages of Wi Fi features
Disadvantages
● Easier to lose or to get stolen because they are portable
● Limited battery life user may need to carry a heavy adaptor
● Keyboard and pointing device may be awkward to use
● Not always easy to upgrade them like adding more RAM
used in office work, educational use, used as a gaming device, general entertainment

Tablets
→ a device which is similar to a smartphone, they have a touchscreen and keys are simply
activated by touching them. Virtual keyboard that is a part of them . they have a series of
sensors which have camera and a microphone and an accelerometer and touch screen

Advantages
● Very fast to switch one
● More portable than laptops
● Better battery life than laptops
● Touch screen techno means that they do not need any other input devices and they are
easy to use
● Can use several apps as a standard
● Not much heat
Disadvantages
● Expensive compared to laptops
● Limited memory or storage compared with laptops
● Tablets tend to support less type of file formats than a laptop
● Typing on a touch screen is harder and chances of an error is high

Smartphones
→ allow phone calls
→ have operating systems allowing them to run a number of computer applications
→ allow user to send and receive emails
→ camera feature
Front and back facing camera
Lightweight and longer battery life
Use bluetooth for connection to printers and other devices
Proximity sensor to detect how close the device is
Accelerometer detect the movement and orientation of the device
Speech recognition systems like siri
Advantages
● Smaller and lighter than laptops
● Easier to use than laptops when on the move
● Can use several apps
● Can be used almost anywhere because they use wi fi
● Reasonable battery life compared to laptops
Disadvantages
● Easier to lose because it is more portable
● Less storage capacity compared to laptops
● Web browsing and photography drain the battery life
