TMH5 MB9

The document describes the TMH 5 MB9 method for sampling freshly mixed concrete at the point of use. It involves sampling concrete from poured or moving concrete using a scoop and placing it in containers. The minimum sample sizes required for various tests are specified based on uncompacted concrete volumes providing approximately 15% surplus.

The **TMH 5 MB9 method** describes the **sampling of freshly mixed concrete** at the point of

use. This procedure is essential for ensuring that the concrete used for testing accurately represents the
entire batch. Here are the key details:

1. **Scope**:
- The method involves **sampling freshly mixed concrete** at the point of use.
- The sampled concrete is then used for **further tests** or to prepare various specimens for
testing¹.

2. **Apparatus**:
- **Scoop**: The scoop used for sampling must be made of a material unaffected by cement. It
should have a known capacity to determine the volume of concrete being taken.
- For samples from a **moving stream of concrete**, a box-shaped scoop with a long handle and
high sides is recommended to prevent spilling.
- For samples from **poured concrete**, a shovel-like scoop with high sides and back is ideal for
easy penetration into the concrete¹.
- **Containers**: Containers must be large enough to hold the required increments of concrete and
made of a material not affected by concrete¹.

3. **Sample Size**:
- The minimum volumes of samples required for various tests are specified. These volumes apply to
**uncompacted concrete** and provide a surplus of approximately **15%**.
- The size of the total sample depends on the tests to be carried out. Calculate the number of single
samples (scoops) to be taken at each point based on the required volume and the scoop(s) to be used¹.

4. **Sampling from Poured Concrete**:

- If samples are taken from concrete in open trucks, heaps, or open-pan type mixers:
- For a production batch with an almost smooth upper surface due to vibration or consistency,
divide the batch into three equal parts. Remove the upper 200 mm of material at three equally spaced
places in each part and take N single samples.
- For a batch in a heap, take N single samples at six equally spaced places around the
circumference at a height of approximately 0.25 H (where H is the heap's height). Also, take N single
samples at three places spaced as above at a height of approximately 0.75 H¹.
