We describe this situation as the number of fruits is the sum


of the number of apples and the number of oranges.

In short we write this as

There is one more way of writing: 6 + 3 = 9.


This process is called addition.
It is read as six plus three is equal to nine.
“ + “ sign is called addition sign or plus sign.

first column. The second numbers are from the first row. The
sums are given in the second row second column onward.
Similarly observe 2 + 1 = 3, 2 + 2 = 4, 2 + 3 = 5.

Subtraction

Count laddoos in the above picture. There are 8 laddoos.


Three laddoos should be given to the maid. How many
laddoos will be left?
Let us cancel three laddoos from the picture.

So, the number of laddoos left are 5. We can write this in


short as follows.

The other format of writing. 8 – 3 = 5.


This process is called subtraction.
We read this as eight minus three equal to five.
The sign “-” stands for subtraction called minus sign.
