presenting the new lesson
Sir
What is your last topic class? The mole is a fundamental concept in
stoichiometry, which is the study of the
quantitative relationships between reactants
and products in chemical reactions.
B. Presenting examples /instances for the
new lesson
Before we proceed on our formal discussion,
let us first arrange this jumbled words.
Jumble words
1. direcn ceno volcanoes
2. posmoceti volcanoes
3. dishe volcano

C. Discussing new concepts and practicing

New skills #1.
So base on the three jumbled words, what do Sir it’s all about the different types of volcano.
you think is our topic for today?
You’re right so today we will discuss the three
types of volcanoes and their differences.
Sir yes sir!
Are you ready?
First of all volcanoes are diverse! They range
from the majestic Mount Rainier, to colossal
shield volcanoes like Mauna Loa and to
volcanic fields that can cover hundreds of
square miles such as at Craters of the Moon
National Monument.
Some volcanoes are picturesque, others less
so? Sir they vary in size from small cinder cones
that stand only a few hundred feet tall to the
most massive mountains on earth. Some have
textbook-perfect conical shapes, and others are
more irregular in form.

Some types of volcanoes tend to erupt only

once (and are called monogenetic), and others
erupt multiple times over their lifespan and are
called what?
Polygenetic Sir

Each volcano is somewhat unique, but most

volcanoes can be classified into one of several Sir it’s the cinder cone, composite and shield
types. volcanoes

Alright so the first one is shield volcano. And

what is shield volcano? Sir These volcanoes are broad, flat, and
resemble a warrior's shield. They are typically
found in Hawaii and Iceland. Shield volcanoes
are formed from low-viscosity basaltic lava,
which flows smoothly and creates gentle
slopes. Their eruptions are characterized by the
release of relatively low-density, fluid lava,
which does not build steep slopes.

this volcano? Lava travels long distances, creating
expansive, thin lava sheets rarely producing
significant ash clouds.

Yes very good

Now we go on to the next one which is

D. Discussing new concepts and practicing

new skills #2
Now we go on to the next one which is
composite volcano.

And what is composite volcano again class? Sir Also known as stratovolcanoes, these
volcanoes have a steep, symmetrical shape
and are often found near tectonic plate

Yes these volcanoes are characterized by their
explosive eruptions, which produce ash, lava
flows, and pyroclastic materials.

If shield volcano is considered non-explosive,

how about this composite volcano?
Sir it is considered explosive because to the
nature of their eruptions and the types of
magma they produce.
Yes and what are the factors that may
contribute to its explosiveness?
Sir we have the magma composition.
Where it has a higher viscosity compared to the
basaltic magma found in shield volcanoes.
High-viscosity magma is more resistant to flow,
leading to the buildup of pressure within the
volcano's conduit.
Yes that is correct then what about its gas 1.
content? The magma in stratovolcanoes contains a
significant amount of dissolved gases, such as
water vapor, carbon dioxide, and sulfur dioxide.

As magma ascends, the pressure decreases,

causing the dissolved gases to come out of
solution and form bubbles.

And the accumulation of gas bubbles

increases the pressure within the magma,
contributing to explosive eruptions. Mount Fuji in Japan, it is the highest mountain
in Japan and a well-known symbol of the
One example of composite volcano is where? country. Mount Fuji is a stratovolcano that last
erupted in 1707, and it is part of the larger Fuji-
Hakone-Izu volcanic belt. The mountain has a
nearly perfect conical shape, which is typical of
composite volcanoes.

These small, steep-sided volcanoes are formed

from the accumulation of solidified lava
fragments, known as cinders or scoria. Cinder

created by the eruption of high-viscosity
andesitic or dacitic lava, which produces a
conical shape due to the fragmentation of lava
as it is expelled from the volcano.

Yes and they are formed by the accumulation

of ejected volcanic fragments during relatively
short-lived eruptions.
Materials are ejected with enough force to
create the steep-sided cone shape. Typically
associated with more localized volcanic
activity. Yes it is considered as explosive because

dioxide.

As magma rises, the decreasing pressure

causes the release of gases, forming bubbles
and contributing to explosive eruptions.

Yes because in cinder cone eruptions, magma

is ejected violently into the air, breaking into
small fragments called cinders or volcanic ash.

The fragmentation process is facilitated by the

expansion of gases and the forceful expulsion
of magma.

E. Developing mastery (Leads to Formative

Assessment)
1. Describe the typical size and structure
of a cinder cone volcano. How does the
composition of ejected material during
eruptions contribute to the formation of
a cinder cone?
2. Explain the key factors that differentiate
a stratovolcano from other types of
volcanoes, and provide an example of a
famous stratovolcano.

F. Finding Practical applications of

concepts and skills in daily living
Understanding different types of volcanoes is
crucial for various aspects of daily life. It helps
in assessing risks, preparing for emergencies,
and planning land use in volcanic regions.

Whether it's for tourism, resource utilization, or

environmental monitoring, knowing the
characteristics of shield volcanoes,
stratovolcanoes, and other types informs
decision-making processes and enhances
safety measures. Additionally, education and
outreach efforts benefit from this knowledge,
empowering communities to understand and
respond effectively to volcanic hazards.

Overall, the practical applications of

understanding volcanic types contribute to
safer living in volcanic regions and better
utilization of volcanic landscapes.

G. Generalization and Abstraction of the

Lesson
Shield volcanoes: Broad and gently sloping,
formed by low-viscosity lava flows. Examples
include Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea.

Stratovolcanoes (or composite volcanoes):

Steep-sided with alternating layers of lava,
ash, and pyroclastic materials. They're formed
by explosive eruptions, often near subduction
zones. Mount Fuji and Mount St. Helens are
examples

Cinder cone volcanoes: Small, steep-sided

cones formed by the accumulation of volcanic
debris around a central vent. Paricutin is a
famous cinder cone volcano.
H. Evaluating Learning
 Activity 1: In 1/2 sheet of paper.
Directions: Enumeration
1. List the three primary types of volcanoes in
order of their eruption intensity, from least
intense to most intense: Shield volcanoes,
cinder cone volcanoes, and composite or
stratovolcanoes.

2. Enumerate the factors that influence the

activity levels of volcanoes. These factors
include tectonic plate movements, hotspot
activity in the Earth's mantle, and the
composition of magma.

3. Discuss the sequence of events that

typically occur during a volcanic eruption.
This sequence usually involves the
movement of magma, the buildup of
pressure, the eruption of various types of
lava and volcanic materials, and the
eventual cooling and solidification of the
erupted materials.

I. Additional Activities for application or

remediation
Assignment:
Design to reinforce your understanding of
different volcanic types and their
characteristics. Take your time, and feel free to
refer to your notes or other resources if
needed.
