Professional Philosophy Statement

Being a first-generation college student, navigating college felt daunting. I was entering a

place where I did not know anyone or wasn’t familiar with anything. When starting this journey,

I was prepared to make the most of my experience; say yes to as many things as possible, make

friends, do an internship, and so much more. Like any dream, it is easier said than done. At the

start of the semester, I was struggling to meet these expectations of me, college was not what I

expected and I felt I had nowhere to belong. I wanted to break away from this mindset and find a

way to engage in my college experience. Once I switched my perspective, I found a place where

I felt I belonged. After that, I really felt I was making a meaningful connection to my campus, by

getting more involved I found people I really connected with, and how I eventually found my

passion for Student Affairs.

My involvement on campus and building connections to my campus is what made my

college experience so great. These experiences mean so much to me, and I have met others

whose experiences were not as great or meaningful. My hope is to make future students feel they

can have a place where they feel they belong and can create connections with others. There are

students whose experiences of college are just going to class and going home and it’s not until

they are about to graduate that they regret not being more involved in college.

It’s my belief that creating meaningful connections with your peers and campus

community helps students be more engaged and enjoy their college experience. I want to make

sure that the work I do with students makes them feel they have a place they fit in. Especially as

a first-generation college student, I struggled to navigate campus but my connections helped me

to realize what resources I had on campus. It’s important for student affairs professionals to

know what resources are available to students across campus to ensure students are getting

support. As a leader, I value establishing a safe space for the students I work with. Navigating

college is hard and without proper support it makes it more difficult. This further emphasizes

why I believe in the importance of knowing what resources are available for students to make

sure our students feel supported and heard.

My goal as a student affairs professional is to create lasting impressions with the students

I meet. I still have lots to learn but those that have been involved in my student affairs journey

have offered me lots of support and guidance. Without them, I would not have realized that

working in higher education was something I care deeply about. So far I feel that throughout my

experiences I have begun to create meaningful connections with the students I have worked with.

I am excited about the future of my student affairs journey and look forward to continuing to

grow and learn to be the best version of myself.
