Blending Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title: Fun with Fractions!

Grade Level: Third Grade

Objectives:

 Students will be able to recognize and generate simple fractions.


 Students will be able to work and solve problems with fractions.

State Standards:

3. NSF.1 Develop an understanding of fractions (i.e., denominators 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10) as numbers

Context: This is a third-grade math lesson about numbers and the sense of recognition. I am
teaching this lesson because the students must understand the meaning behind fractions and
understand how to solve problems regarding fractions. Before this lesson, the larger unit was to
be able to work with whole numbers and decipher what made them whole. This lesson is to
continue what the class has learned and bring new ways to look at numbers. After this lesson,
students can recognize simple fractions and work towards solving them. Now that they have
accomplished those tasks, working through a problem with a fraction will become easier.
Overall, I will be teaching this lesson on generating simple fractions and working towards
solving them.

Data: The students will be divided into three groups. They will be chosen based on their seating
arrangements in the classroom. The student's desk arrangements are decided based on
classroom behavior, not on the level of comprehension of certain subjects. For this lesson, the
students will complete an assignment at the end of the day, including questions based on what
was over in the lesson. I will gather the results to see how well my students comprehended the
lesson and if I need to review certain aspects. Dividing my students into groups will produce
them to be productive and active, as well as their classmates, and by collaborating, they all can
help one another.

Procedures:

Introduction (20 minutes):

As my students walk into the class, they are instructed to hang their bookbags on the wall and
store materials in their cubbies or desks. They must turn in their planners and homework folders
on my desk in their designated basket when the bell rings at 8 a.m. I will welcome my students
with a “Good Morning! I hope we all have an awesome day; please have a pencil ready.” I will
then write two simple fractions on the whiteboard and draw a picture that exemplifies the
fraction. My students will copy this in their math notebook using a pencil, colored pencils, and
markers. I will play an Intro to Fractions from Khan Academy during this beginning practice.
After this, I will jump into the lesson by drawing a square on the board, dividing it into four
parts, and only shading one section. My students will then pick whether the answer is ¾, ¼, ½, or
1. I will instruct them to write down their answer in their notebooks and I will come around their
desk to check. After checking, I will go more in-depth into how the correct answer is ¼. I will
explain that the square has four parts, so the bottom number/denominator is four; there is only
one section shaded, so the top number/numerator is one.

Teacher Directed (15 minutes):

The teacher-directed station will be held at a table where students will be sitting in front of me.
To begin this station, I will hand my students a worksheet that has ten questions regarding simple
fractions. My questions will be along the lines of presenting shapes and some sections being
shaded, then my students will write a corresponding fraction to match the shape. This assignment
is like the introduction, and it will give them more practice. The worksheet will also have a few
questions that show a fraction, and the student will have to shade in the shape to match the
number. Here is an example of a question that will be asked.....
1.) Write in fraction form how many sections of the square are shaded.

Each question will include a group discussion that explains how they received their answer and
walks through all their steps. By having this discussion, I will know that my students can create
fractions and understand the concepts of them. After the time goes off, I will instruct the class to
switch groups and work on another assignment.

Collaborative (15 minutes):

In this section, students will work in groups to solve a hands-on activity. I will provide my
students with a white piece of paper and colorful building blocks. The paper will have fractional
statements that go along with the colors of the building blocks. The following image will show
how the assignment is supposed to look like. In this group activity, students will assist one
another, providing each other with extra help if needed. Afterward, I will provide them with an
online game corresponding to the paper assignment. This game is on the website Splash Learn;
after finishing the game, we will conclude this station.

Independent Digital (15 minutes):

In this section, students will walk back to their seats, and I will instruct them to obtain their
tablets from their desks. They will then watch a video that is a fraction number song. After
listening to the song, my students will be given a short quiz to see what they have learned
throughout this lesson. They can use their notes on the quiz.
Closure (15 minutes):

I will instruct the students to ask me any more questions about the topic to ensure they have
understood the lesson. I will then pass out the worksheet that will be their exit ticket. My
students will work independently, and when completed, they will turn it into me. On this
worksheet, several questions go over the topic of what this lesson has been discussing. After all
papers are turned in, I will examine them and check if I need to reteach some aspects. I will then
thank them for giving me their best work and best work and continue with the rest of our day!

Khan Academy: Intro to Fractions

This multimedia piece is an informational video that goes over the basics of fractions. Khan
Academy is an online tool incorporating thousands of practice exercises, instructional videos,
and personalized learning dashboards. This supports student learning, my standards, and
objectives because the video will introduce them to fractions to provide them with more
insight. This video connects to standard 3. NSF.1, which explains the basics of fractions. Khan
Academy is high-quality because it is the leading online learning resource and can be trusted.
Using the LORI criteria, this app scores mostly 5’s and 4’s. This multimedia choice differentiates
instruction by providing captions and several languages that the students can choose to listen
to. There is also a transcript of what the video describes for students to look at.

YouTube Video: Introduction to Fractions


This piece of multimedia is an informational video that provides a fun-filled song students will
watch. This video describes fractions and how they are divided. This supports student learning,
my standards, and my objective because it walks through the basics of fractions. This video
connects to standard 3. NSF.1, of teaching the reason behind fractions. Using LORI criteria, this
app scores in the fours and threes. This multimedia choice differentiates instruction by
providing someone else to explain the topic. The video provides captions if needed.

Visual Model Game: Identify Unit Fraction

This multimedia piece is a game that allows students to practice pointing out fractions. The
students learn to point out fractions by looking at the shaded shapes. Splash Learn is an online
learning app that maintains the delicate balance between learning and gameplay. It follows the
South Carolina Standards and completes the objectives of the students being able to create
fractions from a picture. Following the LORI criteria, the app scores in the twos and threes. This
multimedia choice differentiates instructions by allowing the students to take time
independently and practice what they have learned. This app provides a read-aloud and visual
representation for other learners.
