3 Compressor

The document discusses three main types of compressors: reciprocating compressors, which use pistons; rotary compressors, which use engaging surfaces between two rotors; and centrifugal compressors, which use an impeller to increase air momentum and pressure.

Compressor

(NITK) Compressor 1/8

Compressor

1 Compressor is used to compress air, gas or vapour

2 Compressor is a work absorbing device i.e., external work must be sup-
plied to compressor to achieve required compression

Reciprocating Compressor

(NITK) Compressor 4/8

Reciprocating Compressor

1 It consists of a cylinder, piston, inlet and outlet valves

2 During the downward motion of the piston, the pressure inside the
cylinder falls below the atmospheric pressure and inlet valve opens
3 The air enters in to the cylinder until the piston reaches bottom dead
centre position
4 As the piston starts moving upwards, the inlet valve is closed and the
pressure starts increasing until the pressure inside the cylinder is above
the delivery pressure
5 The delivery valve opens and air is delivered during the remaining up-
ward motion.

Rotary Compressor

(NITK) Compressor 6/8

Rotary Compressor

1 It consists of two rotors, rotating in opposite directions

2 A small clearance is provided between the rotors and the cylinder surface
to reduce wear
3 It is positive displacement rotary type compressor, the air is entrapped
between two sets of engaging surfaces and the pressure rise is because
of squeezing action.

Centrifugal Compressor

(NITK) Compressor 8/8

Centrifugal Compressor

1 Centrifugal compressors are used to supply large quantities of air but

at a lower pressure ratio
2 It consists of rotating impeller, diffuser and casing
3 The impeller consists of a disc on which radial blades are attached
4 The air enters at atmospheric pressure and moves radially outward
through the impeller and is guided by the impeller vanes.
5 The impeller increases the momentum of the air flowing through it,
causing a rise in pressure and temperature of the air.
