Blended Learning Lesson Plan
Title:
Is this a good sentence? – Learning good sentence structure.
Objectives:
Students will be able to
- Identify errors that have been made in bad sentences.
- Recognize the different aspects of a sentence.
State Standards:
1.1 – Recognize the distinguishing feature of a sentence.
Context:
This is a fist grade lesson plan. Before finding errors premade sentences, students will learn
about how a sentence is made and what the different sentence features are. Students have already
learned about when to capitalize letters, the different punctuation marks, and spelling of our
vocabulary words. With this information the students will have a better understanding on this
lesson. This lesson will help students with the following class where they will be taking their
quiz on sentence writing and the different aspects of a sentence.
Data:
Students will be grouped in 5’s or 6’s depending on the student’s numbers. Student’s will be
grouped based on their seating arrangements in the classroom. The data for this class will be
collected by the exit activity done at the end of the class today.

Procedures:
Introduction: (20 minutes)
I will start the class by having the students come in and grabbing their pencil and
a piece of paper. I will have on the board “Write a sentence about what you did
over the weekend?” I will give them 5 minutes into the class to make sure they
have their sentences written. I will then take volunteers to show the class their
sentence and go over what they did right and if they need to fix any aspects of the
sentence. I will do this for about 10 minutes depending on the number of
volunteers. I will then introduce the different activities we will be working on
with our table groups. They will start at a certain group depending on their table
number. Table 1 will start with teacher directed, table 2 with collaborative, table 3
with independent digital. They will move around in clockwise motion to the
different groups.
Teacher Directed: (15 minutes)
In this section of the lesson, we will start by talking about the different rules we
have to follow when we are writing a sentence. I will lay some cards with words
and punctuation marks on the table. The students are then asked to create a
sentence with the cards. We will then watch First Grade - Sentences by KIPEDU.
The video goes over the rules of building a sentence. Once the video is over, I will
ask the students if they sentence follows the rules. If the student says yes, I will
double check to make sure they do. If there are some problem areas, I will have
the student talk out their process aloud and help where there might be mistakes.
Collaborative: (15 minutes)
In this section students will work in pairs to finish worksheets that have them
fixing different sentences. They will start by watching The Sentence Song by
Scratch Garden. This video is a short song that uses music to go over the
fundamentals of writing a sentence. Once, the song is over they will work on the
worksheets together to find the mistakes in the sentences provided and fix them.
The students will have multiple worksheets and can work at their own pace. They
will not be required to finish a set amount of the worksheets.
Independent Digital: (15 minutes)
During this section of the lesson students will start by watching How to Write a
Sentence for Kids by BuzzWithBee. The video goes over the steps of how to
create a sentence and the rules that need to be followed. Once, the students have
finished watching the video, they will complete an activity Google Slides where
the students will complete sentences with punctuation and choose the letters that
should be capitalized.
Closure: (20 minutes)
At the end of the lesson the students will play a game with their white boards in
teams. I will have different sentences on the projector board for them to fix. The
table that wins the game will get Class Dojo points. I will also pass out their
review homework for the next class test.
Rationale:
“First-Grade Sentences”
This YouTube video is helpful for the students because it goes over the different
aspects that students need to know about. The video is also short which is good
for first graders because their attention span is short, and they need something
quick and gets to the point. This multimedia is also helpful for all learners
because it has close captions and photos which can be used for students with
hearing difficulties. The pictures and sounds are also helpful for students with
vision difficulties.
“The Sentence Song”:
This YouTube video is useful for the students because it is a super fun song that
the students can use to remember what goes into a good sentence. I will also use
the song throughout the entire time we are learning about writing sentences. This
way when the students go to take the test, they can think about the song we
learned. The song can help students who might struggle with remembering what
is needed for a sentence.
“How to Write a Sentence for Kids”:
This YouTube video is helpful to the students so that they have a little more of an
extensive video that goes into the information for writing a sentence while still
explaining it for the first graders to understand. This multimedia is also helpful for
students who have hearing difficulties because there is writing in the video as well
as close captions.
Google Slides:
This app is helpful for the students because they are able to edit the information
that they are working on and can be used in multiple different ways inside the
classroom. This multimedia is helpful for students who might struggle with
writing this way they can understand what they are doing, and the teacher can also
have a better understanding of where the students are on their level of
understanding the topic being taught.
Class Dojo:
This app is a points system that teachers can use for students to reward good
behavior and take away for bad behavior. This will be helpful in the classroom
because the parents can see how the students are doing in the classroom without
always having to give a full report on the day verbally. This app can be used
many different ways depending on how the teacher wants to run their classroom.
