Chapter I

INTRODUCTION

In this Chapter it typically starts with the background of the study, providing

context and historical perspective on the topic under investigation. Following that, the

statement of the problem identifies the specific issues or gaps in knowledge that the

research seeks to address. The significance of the study highlights its potential

contributions to the field, while the scope and delimitation outline the boundaries and

limitations of the research. Finally, the definition of terms clarifies key concepts and

terminology used throughout the study.

Background of the Study

According to the American Psychological Association, 20% of adults regularly delay

task, affecting their efficiency. A research conducted by Zipplar, reveals that 82% of individuals

lack an effective system for managing their time, leading to 51% of their workday being

allocated to less valuable activities that affects their efficiency. In Philippines, most of the of the

students are working to sustain their financial need while studying at the same time. However,

for some time management is one of the many problems, especially those who work at the same

time. Where Individuals who are trying to shift two personalities at a time is a great challenge,

they are loaded with responsibilities that need to be accomplished both in school and their

workplace. As a working student you have to balance your academic responsibilities and work

duties. Balancing work and studies is difficult, it requires exertion of physical strength and time.

It can result to exhaustion and even sickness.

2

Effective time management is critical for students academically. Planning ahead and

managing your time well, will improve one’s chances of succeeding. Most of the students work

to support their selves financially, to pay their academic responsibilities and support their

families, being a student and a bread winner at the same time. In addition, working while

studying can lead to adverse effects. Researcher founds that students performed worse

academically due to their employment obligation. Students consequently lost confidence to

enroll, dropped out, and began looking for steady employment. One of the things that negatively

affects learning is when a student does not effectively use of the time allotted for studying.

Working Students must utilize their time well or follow “Study Programs”. So that, they can plan

ahead of time, participate in various extracurricular activities, and study for quizzes and in term

examinations. Research shows that a well planned management practices positively impacts

students’ academic performance.

The main objective of this study is to determine the relationship between working

students’ time management skills and academic performance, as well as to identify their various

challenges. Assessing their time management skills, and analyzing these skills and their

academic performance. Additionally, the research aims to recommend strategies and techniques

to help students become more responsible workers and students.

Chapter II

THEORETICAL BACKGROUND

This chapter typically includes a review of related literature, as well as a theoretical and

conceptual framework. This section delves into existing scholarly works, theories, and models

relevant to the research topic, resulting in a thorough understanding of the subject. It establishes

the theoretical foundation, identifies knowledge gaps, and defines the conceptual framework that

will guide the study's methodology and analysis.

Foreign Studies

According to Fidan et al. 2005. Improving the quality of the tasks completed in the

allotted time is the goal of time management. The university years are a critical transitional stage

that marks the meeting point of many facets of an individual’s future life. University students

attempt to balance completing increasingly difficult assignments and learning the fundamentals

of the careers they will pursue in the future with adjusting to new connections, freedoms, and

experiences. In this way, college represents a whole process of life preparation, not only a means

of preparing for the corporate world.

According to Lisa & Robert, 2008. Early independent reading is recommended for

youngsters to develop time management skills, as supported by pertinent studies. Adolescent

behaviors have a big impact on academic achievement. Children should be taught time

management skills from an early age by their parents.

According to Kelly, 2004. Time management is a skill that all students need to be

familiar with and proficient in for the purpose of improving outcomes, on this ability. A student
8

can only thrive if they are capable of managing their time well. A large number of students lack

this ability and are unable to handle or manage their time. They suffer as a result of this

weakness or incapacity in both their home and academic lives. As a result, most students have

problems like vulnerability and errand repulsance, which causes them to stall because they

require time management skills. For all students, time management is essential, and it’s one of

the keys to succeeding in the classroom and competing in the field.

According to Yilmaz et. Al, 2006. A small percentage of people have mastery over time

management, while a group of pupils have intermediate aptitude in this area. Their exceptional

time management skills enable them to reach excellent academic standards.

According to İşcan 2008. There is no denying the importance of time management in the

university education process. In the university years, which are characterized as a process of

preparing for the professional world, students must develop an effective use of time awareness in

order to attain their goals. Creating the right environment and providing support for students to

acquire this understanding is one of the university’s missions.

Theoretical/Conceptual Framework

Walberg’s theory of educational productivity is based on the idea that three key factors

significantly influence academic achievement.

Time- is the amount of time students spend engaged in learning activities. This includes

both instructional time in the classroom and time spent studying outside of class.
9

Instructional Quality- The effectiveness of teaching methods, materials, and strategies

used by educators. This encompasses factors such as clear explanations, active learning

techniques, appropriate feedback, and the use of educational resources.

Student Motivation – The level of interest, engagement, and persistence students have in

their learning. Motivated students are more likely to invest effort into their studies, participate

actively in class, and seek out additional learning opportunities.

According to Walberg’s theory, optimizing these three factors is essential for enhancing

educational outcomes and maximizing students’ academic success. By focusing on improving

time management, enhancing instructional quality, and fostering student motivation, educators

can create an environment that supports effective teaching and learning. The researcher choose

Walberg’s theory because it gives a comprehensive view of academic achievement, considering

various factors that contribute to student success. Additionally it emphasizes the importance of

time management in achieving academic goals. By applying this theory, we aim to understand

how time management affects the academic performance of working students and identify ways

to support them in developing effective time management skills for better academic outcomes

Chapter V

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSION, AND RECOMMENDATIONS

A brief overview of the main points discussed in a document or presentation, highlighting

key findings and important insights. The Conclusion section will give you the main outcomes

and implications of the study or discussion are summarized, providing closure to the topic.

Suggestions or advice are offered based on the findings presented, aimed at guiding future

actions or decisions.

Summary of Findings
The findings of the research support the earlier study by (Nashrullah M, 2015), indicating

a significant correlation between time management factors and students' academic success.

Simultaneously, (Sevari K., 2011) hypothesized that effective time management is associated

with improved academic performance. Similarly, the outcomes confirmed Adebayo's assertions

regarding the positive association between time management elements, such as those related to

working students, and academic performance (F., June 6, 2021). Existing studies on time

management skills and academic performance consistently demonstrate a strong positive

correlation, indicating that students who exhibit effective time management tends to achieve

higher academic success. These findings underscore the significance of developing and

promoting time management strategies to enhance student performance in educational settings.

Conclusion

Based on the findings, the following conclusions were formulated:

19

1. The working Senior High School students in ACLC College of Ormoc exhibited time

management skills ranging from average to excellent levels. Overall, their time

management skills were at good level.

2. The academic performance of the respondents spans from satisfactory to outstanding

levels, with a mean grade of 86.65, indicating a very satisfactory performance overall.

This suggests that most respondents are performing well academically, with implications

for their educational outcomes and potential success in their endeavors.

3. The analysis found a strong positive link between how well-working students manage

their time and their academic performance. This connection is meaningful enough to be

statistically significant, showing that good time management greatly affects how well

these students do in their studies. This highlights just how crucial it is for working

students to handle their time effectively to succeed academically. It suggests that by

improving their time management skills, these students can enhance their academic

performance even while juggling work and studies. This could mean better grades and a

smoother balance between their responsibilities, helping them excel despite their busy

schedules.

Recommendations
With the results of this study, the following are recommended:

1. Study the effectiveness of time management workshops designed for working students.

Examine how these workshops help them juggle work and studies, meet deadlines, and

boost their academic performance.

20

2. Investigate the impact of flexible work arrangements, such as remote work options or

flexible scheduling, on the academic performance of working students. Explore how

these arrangements influence their ability to allocate time for studying and attending

classes.

3. Study mentorship programs for working students, where experienced professionals or

faculty members offer guidance on academic and career goals. See how mentorship

influences their motivation, study habits, and overall academic success.

4. Look into financial support programs like scholarships or grants for working students.

See how these help ease financial burdens and affect their academic performance and

ability to focus on studies.

5. Examine how technology helps working students succeed academically. Look into how

tools like educational apps, online resources, or virtual study groups aid learning, time

management, and collaboration among them.

These research recommendations aim to identify effective strategies and interventions that

can help working students overcome challenges and succeed academically despite their dual

roles as employees and students. (JW, 2010)
