LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET 4.

Name of Student: ___________________________ Date: ___________________________

Grade & Section: ___________________________ Subject Teacher: Mr. Joseph M. Meradora

LECTURE 4.5.1: Decision and Conclusion

Case I:
• Decision: Do not Reject 𝐻0 (Accept), When the computed t-value falls in the Acceptance Region
(Unshaded part).
• Conclusion: There is no significant difference between population and sample mean.
Case II:
• Decision: Reject 𝐻0 , When the computed t-value falls in the Rejection Region (Shaded part)
• Conclusion: There is a significant difference between population and sample mean

Illustrative Examples 1:
C.V.: t = 2.33 C.V.: = +2.15
Computed t = 1.64
 Computed t is at Acceptance Region  Computed t = -3.15
 Do not Reject 𝑯𝟎  Computed t is at Rejection Region
 Reject 𝑯𝟎

LECTURE 4.5.2: Solving Problems Involving Test of Hypothesis on Population Mean

In testing hypothesis on the population means, follow the steps below:

1. Identify the given values.
2. State null and alternative hypotheses.
3. Determine tailed test and level of significance.
4. Identify test statistic and critical value.
5. Computation
6. Make a decision
7. Draw conclusion.
Illustrative Example 1:
A manufacturer claims that the average lifetime of his lightbulbs is 36 months. The standard deviation is 8months.
Fifty bulbs are selected, and the average lifetime is found to be 32 months. Should the manufacturer statement be
rejected if the level of confidence to be used is 95%?
Step 1: Identify the given values. Step 2: State Null and Alternative hypotheses.

Ho : 𝜇= 36 months
Ha : 𝜇 ≠ 36 months

Step 3: Determine tailed test and level of Step 4: Identify Test Statistic and Critical Value.
significance.
Test Statistic: n = 50 bulbs, z –test
Tailed test: Two-Tailed Test Critical Values Z= ± 1.96 (Use the Table of Critical
95%, then Level of significance α = 0.05 Values for Z score, LAS 4.4)

Step 5: Computation. Step 6. Make a decision.

𝑥̅ − µ
z= 𝜎 Reject Ho
√𝑛
32−36
z= 8
Since the computed z = -3.54 can be found in the
√50
rejection region.
z = -3.54

Step 7. Draw conclusion.

Since we Reject Ho, there is a significant difference between the population mean and sample mean.

– The average lifetime of lightbulb is not 36 months.

– The manufacturer statement is also rejected.
Illustrative Example 2:
The owner of the factory that sells a particular bottled fruit juice claims that the average capacity of their product
is greater than 250 ml with the standard deviation of 5ml. To test claim, a consumer group gets a sample of 100
such bottles, calculates the capacity of each bottle, and then finds the mean capacity to be 248 ml. Is the claim
true? Use 99% confidence level.
Step 1: Identify the given values. Step 2: State Null and Alternative hypotheses.

Ho : 𝜇 = 250 ml
Ha : 𝜇 > 250 ml

Step 3: Determine tailed test and level of Step 4: Identify Test Statistic and Critical Value.
significance.
Test Statistic: n = 100 Bottles , z –test
Tailed test: One-Tailed Right-Tailed Test Critical Values Z= 2.33 (Use the Table of Critical
99%, then Level of significance α = 0.01 Values for Z score, LAS 4.4)

Step 5: Computation. Step 6. Make a decision.

𝑥̅ − µ
z= 𝜎 Do not Reject Ho
√𝑛
Since the computed z = -4
248−250 can be found in the acceptance region.
z= 5
√100
z = -4
Step 7. Draw conclusion.
Since the decision is Do not Reject Ho , there is no significant difference between the population mean and
sample mean.
– The average capacity of bottled fruit juice is 250 ml.
– The claim is not true.
ACTIVITY 4.5: COMPLETE ME!

State Null and Alternative hypotheses: Ho : ___________ Ha : _____________

Determine tailed test and level of significance: Tailed test: _______________ then Level of significance 5%, α = 0.05
Identify Test Statistic and Critical Value: Test Statistic: n = 20 Students, t –test
Critical Values t = ______ (Use t- table to find C.V., LAS 4.4)
𝑥̅ − µ
Computation: t = 𝑠
√𝑛
106−110
t= 9
√20
t = _____

Make a decision.
Since the t-computed value is _______, which is ________ than the critical value of ______, we _______ the null
hypothesis. We therefore conclude that _________________________________________________.
