CALA COMPONENT D.

Learners’ CALA Guide

Learning Area : Combined Science

Level : O’level
Candidate Name : ..........................................................................
Class : ..........................................................................
Duration : 1 week
CALA Type : Practical, Pen and Paper.
Syllabus Topic : Oxidation and Reduction
Syllabus Sub-Topic : Rusting

COMPETENCES / SKILLS:
Research
Critical thinking
Problem solving
Analysis

BACKGROUND/ CALA CONTEXT

A problem has been identified, that the main environmental impact of rust at school and in
the community, is the gradual degradation of metallic structures. The life span of these
structures is greatly reduced by effects of corrosion. The teacher has requested learners to
investigate conditions which are conducive for metallic structures to rust, and thus identify
ways of reducing corrosion of metallic structures.

Objectives:

By the end of the CALA, learners should be able to:

a) Investigate the process of rusting.

b) State conditions necessary for the process of rusting to occur.

c) Identify structures that are affected by rust.

d) List methods of preventing the formation of rust.

The CALA consists of three parts A, B & C:

Part A:

a) Make a collection of items (eg cutlery, small items from the tool box etc), which are
made up of various materials like copper, iron, zinc, steel, etc.
b) Partially insert (1 type of each of) these items in a container with cold (unboiled
water).
c) Observe these items over a period of 3-4 days.
d) Record any observations on a table of results.
e) Deduce a logical conclusion from your results.

Part B:

a) State 2 conditions necessary for the process of rusting to occur. (2)

b) Describe formation of rust. (3)
c) Write up the word equation for the formation of rust. (3)

Part C:

a) Identify any 4 structure(s) that are affected by rust at your home/school. (4)
b) List any four methods of prevention of rusting. (4)
c) Write up a Report on your findings and include Recommendations on how
metallic structures can be maintained, so as to reduce the effects of rusting. (5)

CALA Tips

-Follow the procedure of Practical Write-ups, in designing your experiment

- Make a collection of items (eg cutlery, small items from the tool box etc), which are made
up of various materials like copper, iron, zinc, steel, plastic etc.

-Partially insert (1 type of each of) these materials in a container with cold (unboiled water).

-Observe these items over a period of 3-4 days.

-Record any observations on a table of results.

-Deduce a logical conclusion from your results.
