GTEC 22013: Applied Calculus II (2021/2022)

Assignment 01
Submission: 04/04/2024

1. A scientist starts with 100 bacteria. After 10 days, he finds that the population has grown to 500.
a) Determine an equation for this population of bacteria.
b) Use the equation to calculate the population after 20 days.
c) Use the equation to estimate when the population will equal 1000.

2. An officer was called to the home of a person who had died during afternoon. In order to estimate the time of
death the coroner took the person’s body temperature twice. At 3:30 pm the temperature was 84. 7∘ F and after
25 mins the temperature was 81. 5∘ F. The room temperature stayed constant at 71∘ F. Find the approximate time
of death assuming the body temperature was normal at 98. 6∘ F at the time of death.

3. A cake is removed from the oven after baking thoroughly, and the temperature of the oven is 450∘ F.The
temperature of the kitchen is 70∘ F, and after 10 minutes the temperature of the cake is 430∘ F.
a) Write the appropriate initial-value problem to describe this situation.
b) Solve the initial-value problem for 𝑇(𝑡).
c) How long will it take for the temperature of the cake to reach 300∘ F ?

4. In a series RC circuit, 𝑅 = 5 ohms, 𝐶 = 0.01 Farad and 𝐸 = 100 Volts. When 𝑡 = 0, 𝑄 = 0. Consider
the given differential equation to find the charge 𝑄 at any time 𝑡.
𝑑𝑄 𝑄
𝑅 + =𝐸
𝑑𝑡 𝐶

5. Consider a water tank problem with equal constant water rates 𝑟𝑖 = 𝑟0 = 𝑟, with only fresh water in the
tank at the initial time, hence 𝑄0 = 0 and with a given initial volume of water in the tank 𝑉0 . Then
consider the given differential equation below to find the function salt in the tank 𝑄 if the incoming salt
concentration is given by the function 𝑞𝑖 (𝑡) = sin(2𝑡).
𝑟0
𝑄 ′ (𝑡) = 𝑎(𝑡)𝑄(𝑡) + 𝑏(𝑡), where 𝑎(𝑡) = − and 𝑏(𝑡) = 𝑟𝑖 𝑞𝑖 (𝑡)
(𝑟𝑖 − 𝑟0 )𝑡 + 𝑉0
