Question 2
Density in uences the buoyancy, ow, and behavior of liquids and solids.
Density is a measure of mass per volume. The average density of an object equals its total mass
divided by its total volume. An object made from a comparatively dense material (such as iron) will
have less volume than an object of equal mass made from some less dense substance (such as
water). Perhaps the highest density known is reached in neutron star matter. The singularity at the
center of a black hole, according to general relativity, does not have any volume, so its density is
unde ned.
Q 2.1 The density of a particular liquid is 870 kg m−3 . From the list of substances given, A2

Question 3
Mass is the measure of the amount of matter in an object.
When an MYP student was assigned the duty to clean and organize the school physics laboratory, he
found an old object as shown.
It was marked as 200 g . Using an electronic balance, he measured the object and recorded the mass
to be 197.4 g . He assumes that the electronic balance is faulty.
Q 3.1 Comment your opinion on his assumption. Your answer should include other B2
possible conclusions.

Question 4
Investigation skills
This task (questions 4 to 6) addresses the key concept of change and focuses on criterion B
(Inquiring and designing) and criterion C (Processing and evaluating). In this task, you will
investigate the factors affecting the voltage in a solar cell.
Solar cells: Harnessing sunlight for clean and sustainable energy.
In order to investigate about the performance of a solar cell, an MYP student decides to study the
factors on which the current produced by solar cell depends. Initially he tries to change the intensity
of light falling on the cell and records the change in voltage produced.

Some of the factors affecting voltage in a solar cell are sunlight intensity, temperature, material
properties, and load resistance.
Another MYP student decided to further investigate into the factors affecting the voltage produced
by the solar cell. This time, he decides to investigate the relationship between the wavelength of the
light falling on the cell and voltage developed across it.
