How do Bases React with Metals?
Activity 2.4 Explanation
Activity- Place a few pieces of granulated zinc metal in a test tube. Add 2 ml of sodium hydroxide solution and warm the contents of the test tube. Repeat the rest of the steps as in activity 2.3 and record your observation. Observations- The gas burns with a blue flame and creates a popping sound. Conclusion- Bases react with metals; such as zinc and aluminum to liberate hydrogen gas. 2NaOH(aq) + Zn(s) → Na2ZnO2(aq) + H2(g) Sodium hydroxide Zinc Sodium zincate Frequently Asked Questions 1. Name the gas that evolved when metal reacts with a base. Ans. Hydrogen gas 2. Give the chemical equation for the reaction. Ans. – Zn + NaOH → Na2ZnO2 + H2 3. Name the reaction that takes place in activity 2.4 class 10 science. Ans.- Displacement reaction 4. Name the salt formed when sodium hydroxide reacts with zinc. Ans. – Sodium zincate (Na2ZnO2)
