Module 2: EI and Empathy Worksheet

Emotional Intelligence Instruments
Reflect on what you learned about the concept of emotional intelligence based on what you read
in your textbook and online. Based on your results with the EI tools, summarize your results
and discuss your strengths and weaknesses with respect to emotional intelligence.
Then discuss the concept with a loved one, friend, or trusted colleague. What are their
perceptions with respect to your self-appraisal?
Your Answer:
The website mindtools.com gave a precise definition and concept of dissecting what
emotional intelligence entails. According to their website it is defined as “the ability to recognize
your emotions, understand them, and see how they affect those around you. Having high
emotional intelligence also means you understand other people’s emotions. This allows you to
manage your relationships better, and avoid potential conflicts” By the Mind Tools Content
Team, 2024). Within emotional intelligence there are 5 important guidelines that coincide with
emotional intelligence that one person must possess in mastering EI, and that is, self-awareness,
self-regulation, motivation, empathy and having superb social skills. With all of these attributes,
one can understand and master emotional intelligence and to be a successful and effective leader
as the reading course material also explained thoroughly. In answering the next question of how
my results reflected my strengths and weaknesses in relation to emotional intelligence I was
asked a series of questions that were related to the 5 important guidelines of what defines
emotional intelligence. This test pinpointed where I am with my emotional intelligence by being
asked questions related to the 5 important guidelines. I scored a 64 on the emotional intelligence
quiz which is considered to be a person to have in-depth knowledge of having a high IQ in
emotional intelligence. If you scored in the realm of 56-75, this is what your score says
according to the MindTools article, “Great! You’re an emotionally intelligent person. You have
great relationships, and you probably find that people approach you for advice. However, when
so many people admire your people skills, it’s easy to lose sight of your own needs. Researchers
have found that emotionally intelligent people often have great leadership potential. Realize this
potential by seeking opportunities to improve even further” By the Mind Tools Content Team,
2022). In reading the above synopsis of my score related to the emotional intelligence quiz, I
feel that my strengths in this category would have to be that I have great rapport with my work
colleagues as well with people I interact with. I can say that I am a person who is very
approachable and friendly. In order to start a conversation, I love to ask people open-ended
questions, as I feel this is a great conversation starter.
Another test I took was on emotional intelligence - on the ability to read other people’s cues
in relation to their facial expressions. The questions consisted of a series of facial expressions of
people expressing different types of emotions. On this test, I received a 19 out of 20 which is
excellent in deciphering people’s emotions (The Greater Good Science Center at the University
of California, Berkeley, 2022). My weaknesses in respect to emotional intelligence came when I
took the final test/questionnaire from the Institute for Health and Human Potential website. This
last test actually shed some light on some weaknesses that I may have, which of course was a
mood dimmer on my ego after having two tests that reflected positive scores on emotional
intelligence. Here is how my results were portrayed over to me. “Congratulations! Your EQ level
is excellent! If you scored in this range, there is a slight caveat however. You are either
extremely high in emotional intelligence or extremely low. How is this possible? These results
may reflect your high level of self-knowledge or a lack of it since you must be self-aware to
assess yourself accurately. For this reason, self-awareness is the foundational competency of
emotional intelligence. You may want to seek clarification from a peer, co-worker or family
member to validate how they feel you respond emotionally when you are under pressure. You’ve
either made it to the top or have a long way to go” (Last Eight Percent, 2022). So in reading this,
my weakness is my emotional behavior when I am under pressure.
In discussing this concept of emotional intelligence and the weakness I have with it, I
discussed it in depth with my husband. His perception with regards to my self-appraisals is he
kindly told me that I do tend to be high strung when it comes to intense pressure. He says that I
tend to get flustered and a little agitated when the going gets tough. In reflecting on this
constructive criticism, hearing things that have a negative impact on my ego is something that is
a little hard to hear, but I feel that this is something that I can work on as a whole. In respect to
this, nobody is perfect and this flaw that I have in regards to emotional intelligence, I know I can
work on now that this questionnaire/test has shed some light on my weaknesses.
