Instructions: Show all your work for full marks

1. (12 marks): (a) Solve for x (do not approximate): 32x + 2 · 3x+1 = 16 .
(b) Let f (x) = log2 (3 − x) and g(x) = 4x2 − 1. Find the composite
function f ◦ g and determine its domain and its range.
6
(c) Let f (x) = . Find the inverse function f −1 (x),
2 + 4x
and determine the range of f (x) and the range of f −1 (x).

2. (6 marks) Find (a) all horizontal and (b) all vertical asymptotes of the graph

x2 9x2 + 6
y=
(2x + 3)(x + 1)2

3. (8 marks) Find the limit or explain why the limit does not exist:

(a) lim ( x2 − 2x − x)
x→∞

x2 + 5x + 6
(b) lim
x→−3 |x2 − 9|
4
4. (4+3 marks) Given the function f (x) = ,
x+1
(a) Use the definition of derivative to calculate the derivative f 0 (x).
(b) Write equation of the tangent line to the curve y = f (x) at
the point (1, 2).

(continued on the other side)

1
5. (5 marks) Find the 1st and the 2 nd derivatives of f (x) = ebx (ebx + x2 e−bx ), where b is a
parameter, and calculate the value of f 00 (x) at x = 0, i.e. calculate f 00 (0) .
(HINT: simplify f (x) before calculating the derivatives.)

6. (12 marks) Find the derivatives of the following functions:

sin x + cos x
(a) f (x) =
tan x − 1
(b) f (x) = ex xe − e2 ln(x2 )
3 +x
(c) f (x) = (1 + x2 ) x (use logarithmic differentiation.)

(d) f (x) = cos sin3 x + x4 cos x

Bonus Question (3 marks). Find the 21-st derivative f (21) (x) of f (x) = sin(3x).
