ESSENTIAL QUESTION:
How are functions and
its equation useful to
real –life situation?
VOCABULARY & CONCEPT
Relation – is a set of ordered pairs
Ex. { ( 1, 2 ) , ( 2, 5 ) , ( 2, 0 ), ( 3, 7 ) }

Function – is a relation in which each

element of the domain corresponds to
exactly one element of the range.
Ex. { ( 1, 4 ) , ( 2, 5 ) , ( 3, 6 ), ( 4, 7 )
}
Domain – is the x- coordinate in an
ordered pair
Range - is the y- coordinate in an
ordered pair
Ex. { ( 1, 4 ) , ( 2, 5 ) , ( 3, 6 ), ( 4, 7 ) }
Domain = {1, 2, 3, 4 }
Range = { 4, 5, 6, 7 }

LINEAR
FUNCTIONS
f(x) = mx + b
EXAMPLES:
1. Find the equation of the line whose slope is 4
and the coordinates of the y- intercept are ( 0, 2 ).

2. Given that the slope of a line is – 3 and the line

passes through the point ( - 2, 4 ). Write the
equation of the line.

3. Find the equation of the line that passes

through the point ( -3, 5 ) and ( - 5 , - 8 ).
4. Find the equation of the line that passes through the
point ( -2, 2 ) and parallel to 4x + 3y = 1

5. Find the equation of the line that passes through the

point ( -1, 8 ) and perpendicular to 6x + 2y = 4
PRACTICE:
1. Write an equation of a line whose y –intercept is -8 and
has a slope of 5.
2. Write an equation of a line whose graph passes
through (-2, -4 ) and has a slope of 3.
3. Find an equation of a line whose graph passes
through (-1, -2 ) and ( 1, 3 ).

4. Find an equation of a line whose graph passes through

(-2, 3) and parallel to 2x – 3y = 5

5. Find an equation of a line in standard and whose graph

passes through (-1, -1) and perpendicular to 6x – 12y = 9

2. CONSTANT FUNCTIONS
F(x) = b
DOMAIN: { x | x Є ℜ }
RANGE: { y | y = b }
Ex. Sketch the graph of f(x) = -2. Determine the
domain and the range.
Answer:
Domain: { x | x Є ℜ }
Range: { y | y = - 2 }

Changing from Standard Form to Vertex Form
Write F(x) = x2 + 10x + 23 in the form F(x) = a(x - h)2 + k.
Sketch the graph.
2
1. Bracket the first two terms.
y = ( x + 10x ) + 23
2 2. Add a value within the
y = (x + 10x + ____
25 - ____)
25 + 23 brackets to make a perfect
y = (x2 + 10x + 25) - 25 + 23 square trinomial. Whatever
you add must be subtracted
y = (x + 5)2 - 2 to keep the value of the
function the same.

3. Group the perfect square

trinomial.

4. Factor the trinomial and

(-5, -2) simplify.
POLYNOMIAL
FUNCTIONS
A monomial in x is a single term of the

form axn, where a is the coefficient and

a real number and n is a whole number.

The following are monomials in x:

5x3 −6.3x 2x2

Direction: Study the given examples and non-examples carefully. Form
a definition of the term or concept based on the examples and
non examples.

1. Polynomial Functions
All of these are polynomial functions.
p(x) = 2x + 3 y = 6x3 — 2x2 + 8x —2
y = 3x2 — 5x + 1 f (x) = 4x4 + 2x2 + x –3

2. None of these are polynomial functions.

y= h(x) =

f (x) = y=
Complete the statement:

A polynomial function is the sum of

_______________ monomials with
___________ coefficients and _________
exponents.
2. Types of Functions.
The degree of this polynomial function , g(x) = 3x2 — 5x + 1, is
2nd.
2 is the highest exponent.
All of these are Constant Functions.
y= 5 h( x ) = 3 y = 12 k(x) = 4
All of these are Linear Functions.
p(x) = 2x + 3 y = 3x - 1 H(x) = 2x + 5 y = 6x - 4

All of these are Quadratic Functions.

P(x) = g(x) = 5x2 + 4x + 3 y = - 3x2 + 2x – 1
