ECE 313 Sp24 HW10

The document describes a problem set involving linear systems and signals. It contains 5 problems related to computing Fourier transforms and using properties of the Fourier transform. The problems involve signals like rectangular pulses, complex exponentials, and cosine signals over finite time intervals.

Problem Set 10

Posted Thursday, April 11th 2024

Due Thursday, April 18th 2024

1. (20 points) Compute the inverse Fourier transform for the following signals.

(a) (! + 1) + (! 1) + j (! + 3) j (! 3)
(b) rect(!/2 + 1) (Note:- write your answer in terms of a sinc function.)

2. (20 points) (O & W 4.38)

Let x(t) be any signal with Fourier transform X(j!). The frequency-shift property of the Fourier
transform may be stated as
FT
ej!0 t x(t) $ X(j(! !0 )).

(a) Prove the frequency-shift property by applying the frequency shift to the FT definition:
Z 1
X(j!) = x(t)e j!t dt.
1

(b) Prove the frequency-shift property instead by using the Fourier transform of ej!0 t in conjunction
with the multiplication property of the Fourier transform.

3. (30 points)
(
e t, 0  t  1
x0 (t) =
0, elsewhere.

Determine the Fourier transform of each of the signals shown in Fig. 1. You should be able to do
this by explicitly evaluating only the transform of x0 (t) and then using properties of the Fourier
transform.

1
Figure 1: Fourier transform calculation, Problem 3.

4. (30 points) Find the Fourier transform of the following signals, which corresponded to a sinusoidal
signal sent over a finite time window.

(a) (
cos(10t), 10  t  10.
x(t) = (1)
0, elsewhere.

(b) (
cos(10t), 0  t  10.
x(t) = (2)
0, elsewhere.

Hint: Use the multiplicative property of the Fourier transform.

5. (Optional) Compute Fourier transforms for the following signals. You must do the complete compu-
tation without relying on tables.

(a) x(t) = e 2(t 1) u(t 1)

(b) x(t) = e 2|t 1|
