 Demonstrate how places on Earth may be located using a coordinate
system (S7ES--IVa-1)

INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT

Everything that surrounds us makes up our environment. The landforms and bodies of water make up
the landscape., the mountains, and valleys, rivers and seas; the climate and weather that we experience; the natural
resources that we use of; the plant and animal that live around us. Truly, the environment is made up of a lot of things.
The characteristics of our environment are determined by the location of our country in the globe and on the planet
where it is found. The exact geographical location of the Philippines on the world map is a range of latitudes and
longitude coordinates.
We use a globe to illustrate the location of places on Earth. A globe is a three-dimensional model with
imaginary lines called latitude(horizontal) and longitude (vertical). The combination of these lines form a grid and
the intersections of these lines at a specific location can be read as coordinates.
Can you name places on earth and where they are located? How can you locate different places on the earth
surface?

The activities in this module will help you find different places or countries using a coordinate system.

ABSTRACTION:
We use a globe to illustrate the location of places on Earth. A globe is a three-
dimensional model with imaginary lines called latitude (horizontal) and longitude (vertical).
The combination of these lines form a grid and the intersections of these lines at a specific
location can be read as coordinates. Latitudinal lines run horizontally around the globe. The
equator is a horizontal line, designated as zero degrees (00) latitude and divides the globe
into northern and southern hemisphere. At the top portion of the globe is the North pole and
at the bottom is the South pole. Latitudinal lines are expressed in degrees and show how far
north or south of the equator a location is. The lines run up to 900 N or 900 S with reference
to the equator.
Longitudinal lines run vertically across the globe, beginning from the North pole
going toward the South pole. Two lines delineate the eastern and western halves of a globe:
Prime meridian and antemeridian. The Prime meridian is designated as zero degrees (0 0)
longitude and passes through the town of Greenwich in England. Longitudinal lines indicate
how far east or west a certain location is with reference to the prime meridian.

ANALYSIS:
(Q1) Answer: Using the geographical coordinate system in the map we can locate places on the
earth surface. It uses degrees of latitude and longitude to describe a location on the earth’s surface.
(Q2) Answer: Latitudinal lines run horizontally around the globe while longitudinal lines run
vertically across the globe.
(Q3) Answer: The reference line in a latitude is the equator while in longitude it is the Prime
meridian.
(Q4) Answer: The latitude and longitude are two coordinates that are used to locate places on the
