Voltage Multiplier Circuits

Objectives:

The student must be able to:

1. Analyze how clampers are used to increase and convert the ac input voltage into dc output
voltage.
2. Enumerate the components used in voltage multiplier circuits.
3. Construct circuits basing on the given schematic diagram

Construct the circuits below and answer the questions.

a. Voltage Doubler Circuit 1.

Use the following components:

 AC Voltage Source (2-terminal)

o Change the following properties by double clicking the component
 Frequency: 1kHz
 Max Voltage: 10
 Capacitor (Change the value to 100uF)
 Diodes (Change the property to 1N4004)
 Voltmeter/Scope Probe (V out)
Table 1:

Measure the dc voltage across the AC Voltage

Input (Right click at the voltage source and
select “View in New Scope)

Write the value only.

Measure the dc voltage across capacitor 1 (near

input voltage) (Right click at the capacitor and
select “View in New Scope)

Write the value only.

Measure the dc voltage across capacitor 2

(Right click at the capacitor and select “View in
New Scope)

Write the value only.

Measure the dc voltage across V out (Output)

(Right click at the Voltmeter and select “View in
New Scope)

Write the value only.

Draw the output waveform across V out

(Output) (Right click at the Voltmeter and select
“View in New Scope)
Questions:

1. Voltage input is multiplied by how many times compared to Vo?

2. Why is V out greater than V in?

3. Is V out = Vc1 + Vc2? _____ (yes/no). Explain your answer.

4. Is Vo = Vc2? _____ (yes/no). Explain your answer.

5. Is Vo = Vc1? _____ (yes/no). Explain your answer.

6. Is Vc1 = Vc2 _____ (yes/no). Explain your answer.
