QUIZ: ONE-WAY ANOVA

For each items, kindly indicate the following:

a. Null Hypothesis
b. Alternative Hypothesis
c. Level of Significance
d. Degrees of Freedom
e. F-ratio Critical Value
f. Decision Rule
g. Computations
h. Scheffé Test (when applicable)
i. Table Summary of Computation
j. Results and Conclusion

1. A test developer wanted to convince others that there is a difference in test performance when a
mechanical aptitude test is constructed with different levels of test difficulty. He made three similar
mechanical ability test with items ranging from easy, medium, and difficult level, respectively. He
used 15 test takers selected at random as participants and divided them equally into three groups.
Using .01 level of significance prove the test developer’s claim. Below is the data he gathered:

Scores on Easy Items Scores on Medium Difficulty Items Scores on Difficult Items
9 4 1
12 6 3
4 8 4
8 2 5
7 10 2

2. A teacher studies the effect of age on creativity. She gathered four groups, each with different
ages. The following are the data she gathered. Find out the effect of age on creativity at .05 level of
significance. Is there a particular age in which creativity is at its peak?

Age 4 Age 6 Age 8 Age 10

3 9 9 7
5 11 12 7
7 14 9 6
4 10 8 4
3 10 9 5
3. A sleep researcher conducts an experiment to determine whether sleep loss affects the ability to
maintain sustained attention. Fifteen individuals are randomly divided into the following three
groups of five subjects each: group 1, which gets the normal amount of sleep (7–8 hours); group 2,
which is sleep-deprived for 24 hours; and group 3, which is sleep-deprived for 48 hours. All three
groups are tested on the same auditory vigilance task. Subjects are presented with half-second
tones spaced at irregular intervals over a 1-hour duration. Occasionally, one of the tones is slightly
shorter than the rest. The subject’s task is to detect the shorter tones. Use .05 level of significance to
help the researcher in his study. The following percentages of correct detections were observed:

Normal Sleep Sleep-Deprived Sleep-Deprived

for 24 Hours for 48 Hours
85 60 60
83 58 48
76 76 38
64 52 47
75 63 50

4. A researcher investigated the effect of volume of background noise on participants’ accuracy

rates while performing a boring task. He tested three groups of randomly selected students and
obtained the following means and sums of squares:

Low Volume Moderate Volume High Volume

Means 61.5 65.5 48.25
n 4 5 7

Using .01 level of significance, complete the following table, perform Scheffe Test when applicable,
and write the results and conclusions.

Source Sum of Squares df Mean Square  Fcv F-ratio DR

Between groups 652.16
Within groups 612.75
Total 1264.92
