Demo – Teaching in Mathematics

Topic: Solving Word Problem involving Direct Proportions.

I. Objectives At the end of the lesson, the pupils are able

to:
A. Content Standard NUMBER AND NUMBER SENSE
Demonstrates understanding of order of operations,
ratio and proportion, percent, exponents, and
integers.
B. Performance Standard Learners are able to apply knowledge of order of
operations ratio and proportion, percent, exponents,
and integers and mathematical
problems and real-life situations.
C. Learning Competency  Solves problems involving direct proportion,
partitive proportion, and inverse proportion in
different contexts such as distance, rate, and
time using appropriate strategies and tools.

4. Energizer

Class before we proceed to our proper discussion, I have prepared an energizer that will awake you
physically and mentally. Are you ready class?
If you are ready instead of saying yes Sir, say “Yes na yes for you”

That’s good class, but before we start, did you know the Mathematics dance?
All you need to do is to copy every step of dance and enjoyed it. So, let’s start.

So were done, enhale… exhale… enhale… exhale…

I think that you enjoyed our energizer. Let’s get started.
5. Review/Drill

Tell whether the ratios are proportion or not. Justify your answer.

a. 1:2 = 5:10
b. 1:3 = 2:6
2 5
c. =
4 8

How do we determine if the two ratios are proportion? What is the procedure?

Yes, that is correct. It’s good to heat that all of you understand the lesson yesterday. Now let’s proceed to
our next topic for today.

I know that all of you have enough knowledge of what we discussed yesterday.
B. During the Lesson /Developmental
Activities
1. Activity: Do One’s Best

Problem 1:
Maleah bought 5 packs of bulwa for 150 pesos. How many packs of bulwa can she buy if she has 300
pesos?

2. Acquire New Knowledge

Questions:
Q1. How did you get your answer?
Q2. What are the steps you have used and followed in answering the problem?

3. Acquire New Knowledge

There are 4 steps or ways in solving word problems.
1. Understand
a) What is asked? The number of packs of bulwa that Maleah can buy.
b) What are the given facts? 5 packs of bulwa, 150 pesos and 300 pesos.

2. Plan
c) What is the operation to be used? Multiplication and Division
d) What is the number sentence? 5 : 150 = n : 300

3. Solve
5 n
e. Solution: =
150 300
150n = 5 x 300
150n = 1500
150 150
n = 10
therefore, Maleah can buy 10 packs of bulwa in her 300 pesos.
4. Check
f. Verifying answer:
5 = 10
150 300
5 x 300 = 10 x 150
1500 = 1500
The above problem is an example of a Direct Proportion.

Direct Proportion – states that when one quantity increases the other quantity will also increase and vice versa.

Let us try to solve another problem.

Problem 2:
During weekends, Amira helps her mother sell buko juice. For every buko, Amira adds 4 liters of water.
How many liters of water does she need for 3 bukos so that the taste will be the same?

Problem 3:
A recipe requires 3 eggs to make 7 cookies. How many eggs will be needed to make 14 cookies?

4. Application
Group Activity:

Instructions:
1. Choose a leader to guide and lead the group in doing the group task.
2. Choose a secretary to write your output.
3. Choose a member of your group to act as reporter.
4. You are given three (3) minutes to finish solving and one (1) minute for the presentation of your
group output.
Group 1 (Class 1)
Instruction: Arrange the given information of a word problem and solve it carefully.

Group 2 (Class 2)
Instruction: Using the pictures given, solve the problem carefully.

Group 3 (Class 3)
Instruction: Analyze and solve the following problem.
