Flowchart Instructions
1. Start and End Points: Every flowchart should have a clear start point and end point. The
start point typically represents the beginning of the process, and the end point represents the
conclusion or final outcome.
2. Use Standard Symbols: Flowcharts use standardized symbols to represent different
elements such as processes, decisions, inputs, outputs, connectors, etc. Using standard symbols
ensures that the flowchart is easily understandable by others.
3. Direction of Flow: Flowcharts typically flow from top to bottom or from left to right. Ensure
that the direction of flow is consistent throughout the flowchart to avoid confusion.
4. Sequence of Actions: The sequence of actions within the process should be logically
organized. Each step or action should follow in a clear and sequential manner.
5. Decision Points: Decision points are represented by diamond-shaped symbols. Each
decision point should have two or more outgoing arrows representing possible outcomes based
on the decision.
6. Connectors: Connectors, represented by small circles, are used to indicate that the flow
continues on another part of the page or another page entirely. Use connectors when the
flowchart becomes too complex to fit on a single page or to maintain readability.
7. Arrows: Arrows are used to show the direction of flow from one step to another. Ensure that
arrows are properly labelled to indicate the sequence of actions or decisions.
8. Parallel Processes: If there are parallel processes or actions that can occur simultaneously,
represent them accordingly in the flowchart. Use parallel lines to indicate parallel processes.
9. Keep It Simple: Flowcharts should be kept as simple and concise as possible while still
accurately representing the process. Avoid unnecessary complexity or clutter that could confuse
the reader.
10. Review and Test: After creating the flowchart, review it carefully to ensure accuracy and
clarity. Test the flowchart by walking through the process step by step to ensure that it
accurately represents the desired workflow.
