Mathematics 10

The document discusses measures of central tendency and position. It defines mean, median and mode as measures of central tendency. It also explains how to calculate each measure through examples. The document then provides tasks for students to determine measures of central tendency and position from given data sets.

MEASURES OF THE CENTRAL TENDENCY

Numerical values that locate the center of a given set of data are called measures of the central tendency. There
are three measures that describe central tendencies: mean, median and mode.
MEAN
The mean or arithmetic mean is the arithmetic average of a given set of data. It is obtained by adding all the
values in the set of data and dividing the result by the total number of values. Mean is denoted by an x-bar or X .

X=
∑ of all x
number of x

Example 1: John’s grades in Mathematics tests are 82, 85, 93, 79 and 88. What is the mean of John’s grades?

Solution: To find the mean:

X=
∑ of all x
number of x
82+ 85+93+79+ 88
X=
5
427
X=
5
X =85.4

MEDIAN
~
Median, denoted as X , is the value that occupies the middle position in a ranked set of data. The following are the
steps in determining the median.
1. Rank the data (usually from least to greatest).
n+1
2. Locate the middle position by , where n is the number of values.
2
~
3. Determine the value of X .

Case 1 – Median for odd n

Example 2: Find the median of the set of data {3, 8, 5, 3. 6}
Solution:
1. Rank the data: 3, 3, 5, 6, 8
5+1 6
2. Locate the middle position: = =3
2 2
~
3. Determine the value of X . It is found in the step 2 that the median score of the given set of data is located at
the third position.
Thus the median is 5.

Case 2 – Median for even n

Example 3: Find the median of the set of data {9, 6, 3, 4, 5, 10}
Solution:
1. Rank the data: 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, 10
6+1 7
2. Locate the middle position: = =3.5
2 2
~
3. Determine the value of X . Finding a position of 3.5 means that the median is halfway the third and fourth
position.
~ 5+6 11
X= = =5.5
2 2
Thus the median is 5.5.

MODE
The mode of a set of data is the value with the most frequent appearance. In addition, ^
X is the symbol of mode.
Example 4: Determine the mode of the following sets of data.
a. 3, 4, 8, 5, 3, 6
b. 9, 8, 7, 8, 5, 10, 6

Solution:
a. In the given set of data, 3 appeared two times making it the most frequent. Therefore the mode is 3.
b. There are two values appeared more than once, 9 and 8 which both appeared twice. Thus, there is no mode
because there is no value that occurred the most often. Hence, 9 and 8 are called modal scores (bimodal).

MEASURES OF POSITION
Measures of position includes dividing the data into four parts, ten parts and hundred parts of equal sizes. The
corresponding partition values are called quartiles, deciles, and percentiles. These values can be determined in the same
way as the median. Only the location is the main difference.

THE QUARTILES
The quartiles are points that divide a ranked data into four equal parts. Each set of data has three quartiles.
 First Quartile(Q1) is a number such that at most one-fourth or 25% of the data are smaller in the value than Q 1,
and at most three-fourths or 75% are larger. Q1 is sometimes called the lower quartile.
 Second Quartile(Q2) is a number such that one-half or 50% of the data are below and above in the value than Q 2,
Q2 is obviously the median. Hence, the former seldom used.
 Third Quartile(Q3) is a number such that at most three-fourths or 75% of the data are smaller in the value than
Q3, and at most one-fourth or 25% are larger. Q3 is sometimes called the upper quartile.

Quartiles can be represented by the diagram below when the given data is arranged in increasing order.

25% 25% 25% 25%

L Q1 Q2 Q3 H
n+1 3(n+1)
If there are n elements in a set of data, the Q1 can be identified as the , and Q3 as the .

Consider the set of data (Ungrouped Data).
` a. (15, 19, 23, 25, 37, 39, 43). Find the lower quartile and upper quartile.

b. (48, 39, 57, 32, 28, 63, 51, 54, 36). Find the median, Q1 and Q3.
Solution:
a. List the data in increasing order.
15 19 23 25 37 39 43

7+1
Lower Quartile = = 2 ∴ the lower quartile is at 2nd that is 19
4

3(7+1)
Upper Quartile = =6 ∴ the upper quartile is at 6th that is 39
4
Solution:
b. List the data in increasing order.
28 32 36 39 48 51 54 57 63
9+1 32+ 36
Q1 = = 2.5 ∴ the Q1 is at 2.5th that is between 32 and 36. Q1 = = 34
4 2

Median(Q2) = 48
3(9+1) 54+57
Q2= = 7.5 ∴ the Q3 at 7.5th that is between 54 and 57. Q3 = = 55.5
4 2
∴ the upper quartile is at 6th that is 39
