The Get & Transform functionality sits beside the Get External Data functionality—this is the way in which you have

Get & Transform supports more formats so it is worth getting familiar with how it works.

A CSV file is a text file that uses commas to separate the values (CSV). It is used by many applications to allow data
to be imported or exported. CSV files are simple text files, and are not formatted in any way.

As one of the most commonly used data formats, it is useful to be able to import CSV files into Excel. When the data

is in an Excel spreadsheet, it can be used in the same way as any other Excel data.

CSV File Format

Although the name comma separated value (CSV), suggests that values are always separated by a comma, this is
not the case. A comma may be used, but there is the problem that data might include a comma. The first line of an
address, for example, might be formatted as “49, Smith Square”. Unless the comma is enclosed in quotation marks
to indicate that it is a real comma, and not a separator, the data cannot be parsed correctly. To get around the

Data is often held in a number of different files, particularly if it has come from a database system. Get & Transform
includes the From Folder option, which allows you to connect to a folder, rather than a file.

Benefit of From Folder

Instead of selecting one file, such as a CSV file, you can connect to a folder containing a number of files. The benefit
of using the From Folder option is that, as additional files are added to or removed, the data is updated after
performing a refresh.

Text formatting allows you to change text to lowercase, uppercase, or capitalize each word, as would be !
appropriate for an address, or a title. You can also trim white spaces from text, or remove nonprintable characters
using the clean option. The prefix option allows you to add text before the current values. The suffix option allows
you to add text after the current values.

2. Database systems use codes. Data in different systems is formatted or stored in different ways. A database
system, for example, might use codes instead of meaningful text labels. Instead of going back to the database
administrator for a different file, you can transform the data by substituting text for the codes.

Data now comes from a variety of sources, ! including applications used within an organization, the cloud, ! and data

Excel’s Get & Transform functionality is easy to use, and powerful enough to cope with a range of different data
