APPLIED STATISTICS AND PROBABILITY FOR ENGINEERS

A. TITLE: APPLIED STATISTICS AND PROBABILITY FOR ENGINEERS

B. COURSE LENGTH: 72 hours

C. COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This is an introductory course in probability and statistics. It is intended to provide engineering students
with a foundation in probability and statistical theory with applications in a variety of engineering
disciplines. Many examples related to real engineering problems are covered. This course covers
estimation, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing, regression, analysis of variance, and quality control.

D. PRE-REQUISITES: None

E. GOALS (STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES):

Upon completion of this course students will:

a) know the basic concepts and methods in statistics;


b) know various estimation techniques and their respective strengths and weaknesses;
c) be able to formulate analytical models to perform both parametric and non-parametric hypothesis
tests;
d) be able to understand and analyze statistics in polling and yield management applications;
e) be able to perform regression analysis and think critically about regression models;
f) know the fundamentals of quality control models

- Classroom tests N0 1 and 2 15%
- Presence 5%
- Class Participation 10%
- Final Exam 70%

Grading scale:
100-90%: A; 89.9-80%: B; 79.9-70%: C; 69.9-60%: D; 59.9%-50%: F, 49.9% and below: E
I. METHOD OF INSTRUCTION: Lectures will be supplemented by other in-class activities,
including informal discussion and in-class exercises.
