introduction

communication refers to the interchange of message or information from one

person to another, either verbally or non-verbally. On the other hand, language is a
human communication method or the system through which two people interact. It
is used in a particular region or community, for imparting a message, to each other,
with the use of words. In the process of communication, language plays an
important part. Indeed, all the living beings in this world communicate in their own
language. These two terms are so closely intertwined that people cannot easily
recognize their difference and end up using them synonymously. But, in reality,
there exist a fine line of difference between language and communication.
What is Language?

In brief definition, Language is a medium that helps in the sending of thoughts and
feelings of two individuals. Similarly, Language allows us to express our feelings
and thoughts via sounds, symbols, written or spoken words, posture, gestures or
signs, etc. Thus, we can continue communication through language. Before the
invention of written words, firstly, Language was using the auditory means of
transmission, through grunts, whistles, or drumbeats. In some cases, tactile or
visual, like drawings, hand signals, fire, or smoke signals, were used as the
medium of communication. Subsequently, over the years, we have seen language
changes that ultimately change the communication process.

What is Communication?

According to the definition of Communication, it is a process of exchanging ideas,

thoughts, and information from one person to another verbally or nonverbally.
Media critic and theorist James Carey said about communication, ”
Communication is a symbolic process whereby reality is produced, maintained,
repaired and transformed.” Communication takes nothing but 7 simple steps such
as the sender, encoding process, Message, Channel, the receiver, Decoding
process, Feedback. Likewise, Feedback is one of the most crucial parts of this
process. Communication is not communication if there is no feedback. Above all,
we can classify communication in five ways: i) Verbal, ii) Non-verbal, iii)
Written/Text, iv) Listening/Audio and Visuals such as charts, graphs, etc.
Why Is Language Important?

Language is what makes us human. It is how people communicate. By learning a

language, it means you have mastered a complex system of words, structure, and
grammar to effectively communicate with others. To most people, language comes
naturally. We learn how to communicate even before we can talk and as we grow
older, we find ways to manipulate language to truly convey what we want to say
with words and complex sentences. Of course, not all communication is through
language, but mastering a language certainly helps speed up the process. This is
one of the many reasons why language is important.

Language Is Important to Culture and Society Language helps us express

our feelings and thoughts — this is unique to our species because it is a way
to express unique ideas and customs within different cultures and societies.

Language Is Important to Business The importance of language in

business is unmatched. Without language here, we can’t share ideas and
grow them into something more

Language Is Important for Individuals And Development Humans all

learn to talk at slightly different times, and observing when a child starts to
use language can be indicative of how well they are developing. But this
does not just apply to babies
The Basic Functions of Language

The main function of language is the use of language. It gives us the ability to
communicate thoughts, ideas, and feelings with others as quickly as possible. But,
within that, we can understand language more by looking at its basic functions.
Informative Function
The informative function of language is when we use language to
communicate any information.

Expressive Function: it is used to express oneself by giving us ways to

convey our feelings, emotions, and attitudes to another person

Directive Function: The directive function of language is a basic function

that helps us to direct or command

o Using Language Effectively

Direct and Indirect Styles Direct is a way to use language to indicate to a

person exactly what you want to say and/or how you’re feeling. Indirect
language means using other words or types of communication to
demonstrate you may be feeling a certain way, but without directly saying
why or what, in other words, being indirect

Personal and Contextual Styles personal style refers to an individual’s

personal way of speaking, is informal, and focuses on that individual.
Contextual styles mean changing language depending on the context of a
situation.

Untranslatable Words Untranslatable words are words or phrases that we

have to adapt from other languages because we do not have a word that
means the same thing in our own language.
Language has a very important role in communication. We can
summarize it in this paragraph

Language is more than a means of communication. It is used all over the

world and every single minute. Not only when we talk, read, and write even
when we socialize, we drive, we trade everywhere we use language in one
form or other. Every aspect of our life involves language. The language also
plays an important role in the development of a person personality, because
communication is the one which drives our lives and makes ourselves better.
Basically, language distinguishes humans from other animal species.

Because of language, the relationship between individuals expands because

it helps to mix individuals with different communities

Language is considered as one of the ways to get to know other cultures

which has an effect on communication
