A Detailed Lesson Plan

In Science for Grade 6 Students

Prepared by Hyacinth S. Kuizon
August 24, 2015

I. Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this lesson the students will be able to understand how
gravitational and frictional force work.
1. Describe gravitational and frictional force.
2. Observe the effects of gravitational and frictional force.
3. Infer how gravity and friction affect movements of objects and people.

II. Subject Matter:

A. Topic:
Gravitatioal Force and Frictional Force

B. References:

Links. Rex Book Store, Inc. pp. 304-319

C. Materials:
Visual Aids (Pictures, Charts, PowerPoint, Flash Cards)

D. Values Integration:

Appreciate the importance of gravity and friction.

III. Learning Strategy:

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

1. Preparatory Activities

Good Morning Class! Good Morning Ma’am!

Before we start let’s have a prayer (one pupil will lead the prayer)
First.

Okay now let’s check your (Pupils will raise their hands if they are
attendance. present.)
Please get your assignments and
pass it to the front.

2. Review

Class, before we go on to our new

topic for this day, let’s have a review Our lesson last meeting is all about the
first. What was our topic last meeting? types and forms of energy.

Energy is the ability to do work.

So what is energy?
Very Good! The two types of energy are potential and
What are the two types of Energy? kinetic energy.

3. Motivation

Topic: Gravitational Force

a. ( shows picture of a car and a ball

being dropped from the building at the
same time)

Now class, this picture shown a car

and a ball being dropped from this
building at the same time.
Which do you think among of these ( one pupil will answer)
two objects would hit the ground first?

b. (drop two objects of the same kind-

two bond papers-one is crumpled and
the other one is not)

Which do you think among of these (one pupil will answer)

two bond papers will hit the ground
first?

4. Presentation of the Topic

This morning class, we will discuss

two topics. The first topic we’re going
to discuss is all about Gravitational
Force.
(all pupils will read the objectives)
(Post the objective of Gravitational
Force topic on the board)

Upon completion of this lesson the

students will be able to understand
how gravitational and frictional force
work.

5. Discussion

To begin our thorough discussion

about gravitational force I am going to
show you a picture.

Suppose class that I am the person

The ball will surely come down after being
here who lives at the Southern part of
thrown upwards because of gravitational
Earth and I am playing a ball at this
force.
moment. Now class, why does every
time I throw a ball upwards, it will
come down? And down there is
towards the center of the earth.

Ok very good! Before we define

gravitational force let’s unlock words
first.

(all pupils will read the definition)

(Unlocking of difficulties)

Gravity- a force that attracts all objects

towards each other.
Acceleration- the rate in which the
speed of an object changes in time.

Now, let’s define Gravitational force.

(all pupils will read the definition)
Gravitational Force- It is the force of
attraction between all masses in the
universe, especially the attraction of

Earth’s mass for bodies near its

surface.

Also, the gravitational force is affected

by distance. The more distant the
body from the earth, the less
gravitational attraction is.

Gravity also class is the reason why

our moon orbits our planet earth.

Without gravity class what do you (one pupil will be called to answer the
think will happen to us? question)

That is how important the gravity class

to our lives. Without it life would be
impossible.
But class, there is also another force
who plays a big role on earth.

(opening for the second topic)

Motivation for Frictional Force

Now we are going to play a guess

mystery word game. All you have to
do is to guess the relationship of these
four pictures. Guess a word that would
describe them. The number of the box
could tell the number of the letter the (pupils will guess the relationship of the
word has. pictures until they will come up to an
answer called friction)
So our second topic for this is all
about Frictional Force.

Explain the objective for this topic.

(all pupils will read the definition)
Post the definition of frictional force.
Frictional force- It causes the object
that moves along a surface to slow
down and eventually stop.

(all pupils will read the definition)

(Unlock some word)

Friction- opposes motion between

surfaces sticking or touching together.

Types of Friction
(all pupils will read the definition)
1. Rolling Friction- It is the frictional
force associated with the rotational
movement of a wheel or other circular
objects along a surface.

Example:

(all pupils will read the definition)

2. Fluid Friction- Is the friction
between an object and the water or
between a moving objects in the air.

Example:

3. Sliding Friction- also called dry (all pupils will read the definition)
friction, occurs when two objects are
rubbing or sliding against each other.

Example:
(all pupils will read the definition)

4. Static Friction- occurs in a

stationary objects or objects at rest.

Example:

Yes ma’am!

Now class, do you understand the four

types of friction?

If you understand now, we’re going to

play another game. So you will be (the two groups will be given a flash cards
grouped in to two. All you have to do to be raised if they have chosen an
is to guess what type of friction answer)
happens in the picture I will be
showing. (10 pictures)

a. jeans o your legs when putting

them on
b. train goes around a curve
c. fish swimming underwater
d. notebook place on a table
e. you sitting in a chair
f. soccer ball kicked across a grassy
field
g. the bottom of a glass being pushed
h. motorboat skidding over water
i. wooden block sitting in a ramp
j. rubbing both hands together to
create heat

6. Activity
This time class we’ll be having our
activity. Having the same group you
will perform this for 15 minutes. After
that, you will present your works.

(see attachments)

7. Generalization (one pupil will answer)

How gravity works?

How friction works?

8. Application
(one pupil will answer)
How gravity helps us in our daily
lives?
How friction helps us in our daily
lives?

2. What would happen to a vehicle that is running very fast in a highway if there was no
friction between the wheels and the road?
