INSTRUCTIONS
1. This paper consists of sections A and B with a total of eight (8) questions.
2. Answer all questions in section A and three (3) questions from section B. Questions five
(5) and six (6) are compulsory.
3. Each question in section A carries ten (10) marks and twenty (20) marks in section B.
4. Cellular phones and any unauthorised materilals are not allowed in the examination room.

SECTION A: (40 Marks)
1. The atriculation of various speech sounds in English language depend on the contact of
various organs. Explain the importance of the following organs in sound production.
i) Lips
ii) Tongue
iii) Vocal colds
iv) Velum
v) Teeth
2. ( a) Re write the sentences below by replacing the underlined words with one word without
changing the meaning of the original sentence.
(b) Use zero derivation morphological process to construct two sentences for each word
given below functioning as noun and verb.
i) Table
ii) Skin
iii) Switch
iv) Stone
v) Head
3. The following are the language functions. For each function, define and provide a
meaningful and grammatical sentence expressing it.
i. Aesthetic function
ii. Metalinguistic function
iii. Informative function
iv. Directive function
v. Emotive function.

4. (a). Describe five reasons for making end of essay citation in academic wring.

Answer three (3) questions from this section. Questions five (5) and six (6) are compulsory.
5. As a form six student you have witnessed many Tanzanian students fail to use or speak
English language more fluently despite the efforts of teaching it as a subject in all levels
of education. Write a letter to the editor of Nipashe Newspaper P. O. Box 212, Dar – Es –
Salaam to support the truth that English language is needed to be used as a medium of
instruction in all levels of education in Tanzania. The main body should have six (06)
points.
6. Tanzania is a multi – lingual nation with Kiswahili and English languages as dorminant
ones. Describe the co – existance use of those languages in various domains. Give eight
(8) points.
7. Phonologicaly English differs from Kiswahili or Ethnic languages in Tanzania. This is
caused by speech factors and these factors sometimes cause Tanzanian learners of English
fail to understand what natives of English speakers are saying. Verify the statement by
using eight (8) points.
8. Joan the diplomat was sent by her country to visit Tanzania. Unfortunately, she can’t speak
Kiswahili language. For that reason, she must hire an interpreter. Why is it necessary for
her to do that? (Eight points).
