Mathematics and numeracy are closely related, but they are not the same thing. Mathematics involves
universal truth, follow the rules and is accurate whereas numeracy can involve estimate. Both use
problem solving and draw on the same concept.
It’s important for teachers to make links to the real world where they can, to help children develop their
numeracy skills as it helps prepare them for when they are older.
Linking the learning to real life helps them learn better retain the information.

I had a positive experience participating in mathematics lessons. I always loved the feeling of
competitiveness, and I felt more confident in my abilities. I always asking questions to constantly
improve. Our teacher was amazing, she always provided us with a variety of positive emotions which
helped me develop a strong love for learning the subject. I remember admiring my teacher and the way
she would deliver the information to us and how she would use different methods to help us
understand. Sometimes, we would have a competition in class. I always looked forward to these. It was
competitive and brought lots of entertainment to the subject. I observed my own learning of
mathematics as learning several different topics, it was interesting discovering different topics of
mathematics and how we can use certain skills to link some to others. I also viewed it as a way of
thinking, mathematics came naturally to me, I always felt a pleasant feeling of satisfaction working out
different questions. I remember the best feeling would be when I understand the topic well and would
move on to a more difficult one to solve it without being taught it. My experience in learning
mathematics grew many positive emotions in me and made me develop a strong connection to the
subject, as well as having an admirable teacher who had great aspects such as patience and passion.
These frame the way in which I see myself as a teacher. My experience has also taught me that it is
important to understand that there may be students who come to class with negative feelings towards
it, as they may find it boring, too complex or any other reason. However, there are methods such as
creating a game or a monthly competition with prizes, to help motivate students and provide them with
positive feelings towards mathematics. I also believe using different examples and creating scenarios for
students when explaining a topic or a question helps reduce that feeling of struggle. Also very
importantly learning to adapt to the way each student learns or what each student finds comfortable to
help accommodate to their way of learning and provide them with a positive feeling towards the
subject.

An important part of goal setting is to ensure you monitor your progress as you go. This will help you work
towards your goal by seeing if you are improving. There are many ways to do this. You might like to reflect on
Monitor
your study / complete a set test / complete review questions /re-attempt questions on Assignment 1A that you
progress got wrong. You might do this each week as you go, or perhaps just at intervals, e.g. 2 or 3 times during the 6
week study period.
