1. For each given function f , evaluate the Riemann sum on the specified interval [a, b] and
partition:

(a) f (x) = x2 + 1, a = −1, b = 2, a = −1 < −0.5 < 0 < 0.5 < 1 < 1.5 < 2 = b and ci is
the midpoint of the ith subinterval
(b) f (x) = x3 + 2x + 1, a = 0, b = 5, a = 0 < 1.1 < 2 < 3.2 < 4 < 5 = b and c1 = 0.5,
c2 = 1.5, c3 = 2.5, c4 = 3.6, c5 = 5.

2. Use the limit definition and properties of definite integrals to evaluate the following definite
integrals:

7. Use the disc or the washer method to find the volume of the solids described below:

(a) the region bounded by x = 2y − y 2 , x = 0 is rotated about


(i) the x−axis (ii) the y−axis (iii) the line x = 5

(b) the region enclosed by y = x − 2, y = 4 − x, and the x−axis is rotated about
(i) the x−axis (ii) the y−axis (iii) the line y = 1

8. Use the shell method to find the volume of the solids described below:

(a) the region in the first quadrant bounded by the parabola y = x2 , the y−axis and the
line y = 1 is revolved about
(i) the x−axis (ii) the y−axis (iii) the line x = 2 (iv) the line y = 1

(b) the region between the semicircle y = 1 − 1 − x2 and the line y = 1 is rotated about
(i) the line y = 1 (ii) the line y = −1

9. Find the length of the arc of the curve given below:

10. Find the area of the surface of revolution generated by revolving the curve x = y 3 from
y = 0 to y = 1 about the x-axis.

11. The arc of the parabola y = x2 from (1, 1) to (2, 4) is rotated about the y−axis. Find the
area of the resulting surface.

12. Find the centroid of the given region bounded by the following curves:

(a) y = x2 , y = 0 and x = 1 (b) y = sin x, y = 0 from x = 0 to x = π



(c) the semicircle y = a2 − x2 , and y = 0

13. Find the moment of inertia about the x−axis, (Ix ) and about the y−axis, (Iy ) for the
region under the following curves:

(a) y = x, x = 1, x = 4 and y = 0
(b) y = sin x, 0 ≤ x ≤ π
(c) y = ex , 0 ≤ x ≤ 2
