QUESTIONS
(SOLVED)

1)TO FIND HCF USING EUCLID’S DIVISION

ALGORITHM

Using Euclid’s division lemma, a = b q + r

Therefore, HCF ( 4052, 12576) = 4

2)SHOW THAT ANY POSITIVE ODD INTEGER IS OF THE

FORM 6q + 1, OR 6q + 3, OR 6q + 5, WHERE q IS
SOME INTEGER.

Using Euclid’s division lemma, a = b q + r, 0

≤ r < b For b = 6
a = 6 q + r, 0 ≤ r < 6
The possible values of r are 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 and
5.
If r = 0, then a = 6 q = 2(3q) which is even

If r = 1, then a =6 q + 1 =2(3q) + 1 which is

odd
If r = 2, then a =6 q + 2 =2(3q+1) which is
even
If r = 3, then a =6 q + 3 =2(3q+1) +1 which is
odd
If r = 4, then a =6 q + 4 =2(3q+2) which
iseven
If r = 5, then a =6 q + 5 =2(3q+2) + 1 which
is odd
From the above , it is clear that any positive
odd integer is of the form
6q + 1, or 6q + 3, or 6q + 5, where q is
some positive integer.

3)TO CHECK WHETHER 7 × 11 × 13 + 13 IS

COMPOSITE OR NOT.

7 × 11 × 13 + 13 = 13 × ( 7X11 + 1)
= 13X78
The number 7X11X13 +13 has 13 and 78 as
factors other than 1 and the number itself.
Therefore it is a composite number

4)TO SHOW THAT THE SQUARE OF ANY POSITIVE

INTEGER IS EITHER OF THE FORM 3m OR 3m +1
FOR SOME INTEGER m.
Using Euclid’s division lemma
a = bq + r, 0 ≤ r < b
For b = 3, a = 3q + r, 0 ≤ r < 3
Possible values of r are 0, 1 and 2.
Case 1:For r = 0, a = 3q
a² = (3q)² = 9q² = 3(3q²) = 3m, where
m = 3q²

Case 2:For r = 1, a = 3q + 1
a² = (3q + 1)² = (3q)² + (1)² + 2X3qX1
= 9q² + 1 + 6q
= 9q² + 6q+1
= 3( 3q² + 2q ) + 1 = 3m + 1,
where m = 3q² + 2q
Case 3: For r = 2, a = 3q + 2
a² = (3q + 2)² = (3q)² + (2)² + 2 X 3q X 2
= 9q² + 4 + 12q = 9q² + 12q +3 + 1
=3(3q² + 4q + 1 ) + 1
= 3m+ 1, where m
= 3q² + 4q + 1
From the above 3 cases, it is clear that the
square of any positive integer is either of
the form 3m or 3m +1 for some integer m.

5)TO CHECK WHETHER 6ⁿ CAN END WITH THE DIGIT

0 FOR ANY NATURAL NUMBER N.

For a number to end with digit zero it

should have 2 and 5 as factors
But, we can write 6ⁿ= ( 2× 3 )ⁿ
It means 2 and 5 should be the factors of
( 2× 3 )ⁿ but 5 can never be the factor of
( 2× 3 )n as it has only two prime factors 2
and 3 which are unique according to
Fundamental Theorem of Arithmetic.
Hence, 6ⁿ cannot end with digit zero.

6)FIND THE HCF AND LCM OF 6, 72 AND 120 USING

THE PRIME FACTORISATION METHOD.
Using Fundamental Theorem of Arithmetic,
6 = 2¹ × 3¹
72 = 2³ × 3²
120 = 2³ × 3¹ × 5¹
HCF ( 6, 72, 120 ) = 2¹ × 3¹ (Smallest
powers of common factors 2 and 3 )
=2×3=6
LCM ( 6, 72, 120 ) = 2³ × 3² × 5¹
(Greatest powers of all the prime factors 2, 3
and 5 )
= 8 × 9 × 5 = 360

7) PROVE THAT 3 + 2√5 IS IRRATIONAL.

Let, if possible, 3 + 2√5 is rational.
Then, 3 + 2√5 = p/q, where p and q are co-
primes and
q ≠ 0.
Or 2√5 = p/q – 3
Or √5 = (p/q – 3 )/2 = (p – 3q)/2q
Since, p and q are the integers, therefore
(p – 3q)/2q is rational, and so √5 is rational.
But this contradicts the fact that √5 is
irrational.
Therefore, our supposition that 3 + 2√5 is
rational, is wrong.
Hence, 3 + 2√5 is irrational.

8)Without actual division check whether 8 has a
terminating decimal expansion or not
17 17
8
=23
17
= 23
=17/2 3 X 50
The denominator is of the form 2mX5n .
17
Therefore 8 has a terminating decimal
expansion

respectively.
Solution:
Algorithm
398 – 7 = 391, 436 – 11 = 425, 542 – 15 = 527
HCF of 391, 425, 527 = 17
