Patterns and Relations (Variables and Equations)

Date: Mar. 4 - Mar. 22

Duration: Approx. 3 Weeks

Subject: Mathematics Grade: 8

OUTCOMES

General GENERAL OUTCOME:

Learning
Outcomes: Represent algebraic expressions in multiple ways.

Specific Model and solve problems concretely, pictorially and

Learning symbolically, using linear equations of the form:
Outcomes: 2.1 • ax = b
2.2 • x/a = b, a ≠ 0
2.3 • ax + b = c
2.4 • x/a + b = c, a ≠ 0
2.5 • a(x + b) = c
where a, b and c are integers.
[C, CN, PS, V]

SUCCESS CRITERIA

Students will:
● Model problems using different forms of linear equations outlined:
○ ax = b
○ x/a = b, a ≠ 0
○ ax + b = c
○ x/a + b = c, a ≠ 0
○ a(x + b) = c
where a, b and c are integers so that they can develop a strong understanding of
how equations represent real-world situations. [C, CN, PS, V]

● Solve the problems symbolically using algebraic manipulation, so that they

can efficiently find solutions to the equations and understand the abstract
representation of the problems. [C, CN, PS, V]

● Solve problems concretely using manipulatives and drawings for the given
forms of equations, so that they can visualize and understand the solutions.
[C, CN, PS, V]

● Solve problems pictorially by creating diagrams or sketches, so that they can

visually represent and analyze the solutions to the equation. [C, CN, PS, V]

● Apply the knowledge gained from different forms of linear equations to

model and solve real-world problems so that they can demonstrate their
ability to represent algebraic equations. [C, CN, PS, V]
Mathematics Unit Plan 2

ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS

● How can patterns be described and represented using

variables and equations?
● How can mathematical reasoning and problem-solving skills be
applied to analyze and interpret patterns?
● What strategies can be used to solve systems of relations and
patterns in the form of one-step and two-step equations?

ASSESSMENTS

NAME OF
ASSESSMENT DESCRIPTION
ASSESSMENT

Exit Slips Exit slips will be used as a formative assessment at

least once a week. They will be attended to after the
lessons and be addressed in the next class.

Quizizz Quizizz will be used for formative assessment as it is a

great website for students to be engaged and answer
questions related to the lesson.

Blooket Like Quizizz, Blooket will also be used for formative

assessment. This website is great for formative
assessment as it keeps the students engaged and
repeats questions that might be challenging to
students.

Unit Test The unit test will be the final assessment of the unit so
that students have the opportunity to review and ask
any questions that need clarification. This written
examination will consis of multiple sections that are
designed to assess the specific learning goals. This
assessment will be summative as it will ensure the
student’s grade for this unit.

Day 1 Students will be introduced to a new unit
of study. The first lesson will focus on a
review of adding and subtracting integers.
Students will also have to find the
unknown value in an equation. To start off
the lesson, there will be visual
representations of one-step equations of
the form (x+a) = b. Students will investigate
the visual representations and try to find
the equation that is represented.
Following the review students will
participate in a jigsaw activity that has
them collaborate to solve equations. To
end the class students will engage in a
meaningful notes section.
