UNIT 4.

ELECTRICITY
1. WHAT IS ELECTRICITY?

Electricity is a form of energy that we use to power electrical devices and machines.

1. 1 Electrical charges
Atoms are composed of 3 smaller particles:

PROTONS (positive charge)

NEUTRONS (no charge)

ELECTRONS (negative charge)

Usually atoms have the same number of protons and electrons = electrically neutral.

- If an atom gains electrons = NEGATIVE CHARGE

- If an atom loses electrons = POSITIVE CHARGE

Electrically charged objects can attract or repel.

Opposite charges (+ and -) attract.

Same charges (+ and + (- and - ) repel.

1. 2 Electrical conductors and insulators

Electrical conductor materials allow electricity to travel through them. Ex: copper,
silver, aluminum…

Electrical insulator materials do NOT allow electricity to travel through them. Ex:
wood, plastic, paper…

1. 3 Types of electricity

There are two types of electricity:

- STATIC ELECTRICITY: is a type of electricity that does not flow. Ex: Lightning
(natural discharge of static electricity accumulated in clouds) or rubbing a
balloon.
- DYNAMIC OR CURRENT ELECTRICITY: there is a flow of electrons through
electrical conductors in an electric circuit.
1. 4 Electrical circuits

Current electricity flows through electrical circuits. A simple circuit is made up of four
components:

ENERGY SOURCE: they provide energy. ex: batteries.

LOAD: component of a circuit that consumes power or energy. Ex: light.
CONDUCTOR: allows electricity to pass through it. Ex: copper wire.
SWITCH: component that opens the circuit (allows electricity to flow) or closes the
circuit (stopping the flow)
2. HOW DOES ELECTRICITY REACH OUR HOME?

3. WHAT IS A ROBOT?
A robot is a machine that can be programmed to do some tasks to make our lives easier.
They usually need electricity to function.
Robotics is the branch of engineering which designs and constructs robots.

Robots have different functions and can be used in many different places: at home, in
hospitals, industry, space, works…
