windPRO - Shadow

EMD windPRO BASIC course - Shadow 1

SHADOW
Calculates:
Potential shadow flickering impact at
each receptor: date, time and duration
of the event(s)
Potential shadow flickering impact
from each WTG
Map of shadow impact (e.g. h/y)

EMD windPRO BASIC course - Shadow 2

Principles

Simulates:
Position of the Sun respect to WTG rotor disk
→ shadow casted → check vs. window
Step: 1 minute for 1 full year

EMD windPRO BASIC course - Shadow 3

Principles
Limits to the extent of the shadow due to atmospheric
dissipation set by German Guidelines:
Sun should be > 3° above horizon
WTG blades should cover >20% of solar disk

Average blade width used

to calculate max distance

EMD windPRO BASIC course - Shadow 4

Two types of calculation

Worst case:
sun always shining
WTG always rotating
wind always in the direction of the sun (max rotor surface)

Statistical or ”realistic” case: includes

sunshine probabilities
WTG operation (sectorwise operational hours)

Example of limits

Regulation Max stat. Max worst Worst day

Input required

RD

Window size
& orientation
h

(x, y, z) (x, y, z)
EMD windPRO BASIC course - Shadow 7
Receptors

Window (user slope)

Single direction mode: the
orientation of the window is
considered
Greenhouse mode: worst case,
rotating window, facing all
turbines

Flat area (garden)

EMD windPRO BASIC course - Shadow 8

Receptors

The position of the receptors can be defined depending on input

available

EMD windPRO BASIC course - Shadow 9

Visibility

Only visible turbines are considered: ZVI (Zones of Visual

Influence) calculation in background
A WTG is visible if it is from any part of the receptor
Option of topographic shadow: visibility of the sun is considered

Curtailments
Flicker impact can be reduced by
stopping WTGs in potentially
affected hours/periods
Often these periods can be agreed
with neighbours
(e.g. no need if nobody is at home!)
windPRO Shadow Calendar!

EMD windPRO BASIC course - Shadow 11

Curtailments
Two options:
Curtailment scheme already available:
enter which WTG to stop, when & for how
long
Curtailment scheme to be assessed:
calculate when the WTG(s) should be stopped
(requires a previous SHADOW calculation with
no curtailements)

Hints & Warnings
Correct receptor orientation is
crucial
Correct time zone is crucial
Correct DEM is crucial
Do not underestimate this
problem/assume neighbours are
aware of it!
Inform and discuss it at planning
phase
