Applied Mechanics 2023 Set2
Final Internal Examination 2080 3. a) Sketch the bending moment diagram (BMD) and shear force diagram (SFD) for the given beam (figure 3a),
FACULTY OF SCINCE AND Level B. E. FM 100 including all significant points. [10]
TECHNOLOGY Programme BCE (Set 2) PM 45
SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING Year/Part I/II Time 3 Hrs b) Calculate the forces present in each member of the truss based on the provided figure 3b. [8]
Candidates are required to give answers in their own words as far as practicable.
The figure in the margin indicates full marks.
Attempt all the questions
Assume the data where required
1. a) Consider a rectangular block that experiences the force illustrated in the figure 1 a. Replace this set of
forces with a single resultant force and a couple acting at point O . [8]
b) Calculate the reactions at the contact points when three cylinders are stacked in a rectangular ditch, as
depicted in the figure 1 b. The weights of the cylinders are provided: Cylinder A weighs 2 kN, Cylinder B Figure 3a Figure 3 b
weighs 5 kN, and Cylinder C weighs 3 kN. [9]
4. The vertical motion of mass A is defined by the relation x = 10 sin 2t + 15 cos 2t +100, where x and t are
expressed in mm and seconds, respectively. Determine (a) the position, velocity and acceleration of A
when t = 1 s, (b) the maximum velocity of A. (figure 4a) [10]

A shot is fired with a bullet from a point 30 m in front of vertical wall 20 m high. Find the minimum angle
of projection with horizontal to enable the shot to just clear the wall. (figure 4b) [10]

2. Find the polar moment of inertia at point ‘O’ for the shaded area in the figure 2a. [10]
OR
State and prove parallel axis theorem. Also determine the centroidal X and Y coordinate of the hatched area of
figure 2b. [4+6]

5. The two blocks shown are originally at rest. Neglecting the masses of pulleys and the effect of friction
in the pulleys. Assuming that the coefficients of friction between block A and the horizontal surface
is negligible. Determine the acceleration of each block an d the tension in the cable. (figure 5) [10]

6. A spring is used to stop a 60 kg package which is sliding on a horizontal surface. The spring has a
constant k = 20 kN/m and is held by cables so that it is initially compressed 120 mm. The package has a
velocity of 2.5 m/s in the position shown and the maximum deflection of the spring is 40 mm. Determine
(a) the coefficient of kinetic friction between the package and surface and
(b) the velocity of the package as it passes again through the position shown. [10]

7. In a game of pool, ball A is moving with a velocity of magnitude Vo = 4.5 m/s when it strikes balls B and
C, which are at rest and aligned as shown. Knowing that after the collision the three balls move in the
directions indicated and assuming the frictionless and perfectly elastic impact determine the magnitude of
the velocities of VA, VB and VC. [15]
