Title: Exploring 2D and 3D Shapes

Grade Level: 1st Grade

Duration: 45 minutes

Objective:

Students will be able to identify and describe 2D and 3D shapes.


Students will be able to differentiate between 2D and 3D shapes.
Students will be able to create and manipulate shapes using various
materials.
Materials:

Various 2D and 3D shape models (e.g., circles, squares, triangles, cubes,


spheres, cylinders)
Chart paper and markers
Whiteboard and markers
Shape flashcards
Playdough or clay
Scissors and construction paper
Procedure:

Introduction (5 minutes):
Begin by asking students to recall what shapes are and what they know
about them.
Introduce the concept of 2D and 3D shapes, explaining the difference
between them briefly.
Warm-up Activity: Shape Sorting (10 minutes):

Display a variety of 2D and 3D shapes on the board or on a table.


Provide each student with a set of shape flashcards.
Instruct students to sort the flashcards into two groups: 2D shapes and 3D
shapes.
Encourage students to discuss their choices with their peers.
Guided Practice (10 minutes):

Show examples of common 2D shapes (circle, square, triangle) and 3D


shapes (cube, sphere, cylinder).
Discuss the characteristics of each shape (e.g., number of sides, edges,
vertices).
Have students identify the shapes and describe their features.
Hands-on Activity: Shape Creations (10 minutes):

Provide students with playdough or clay.


Instruct them to use the materials to create different 2D and 3D shapes.
Circulate around the room to offer assistance and observe students'
creations.
Application and Assessment (5 minutes):

Hand out construction paper and scissors.


Ask students to cut out various shapes from the paper.
Have them glue the shapes onto a larger sheet of paper and label each
shape.
Conclusion (5 minutes):

Review the names and characteristics of the shapes discussed in the


lesson.
Encourage students to continue exploring shapes in their everyday
environment.
Provide opportunities for students to share their shape creations with the
class.
Extension Activity (Optional):

Introduce more complex 2D shapes such as pentagons, hexagons, and


octagons.
Explore composite shapes made up of multiple simpler shapes.

and by reviewing their completed shape creations.
Look for evidence of students correctly identifying and describing 2D and
