Assignment II
Instructions: Show all the steps in the calculation for grading, partial marks will be given for steps
(partial marks might be deducted if steps are incorrect even if the final solution is correct).
You may use the known values for fundamental constants, e.g., e=1.6×10−19C; μ0=4π×10−7N/A-2,
me=9.11×10−31kg, mP=1.67×10−27kg etc.

Grading: 5 marks per problem. Maximum marks for the assignment is 75.

1. A long straight wire, carrying uniform line charge λ, is surrounded by a coaxial cylinder with
radius a made out of insulating material.
a. Find the electric displacement at a distance z from the wire (z may be greater than
or less than a, mention separately if required).
b. Also find the electric field at z if z > a.

2. A point charge q is embedded at the center of a sphere of linear dielectric material (with
susceptibility χe and radius R).
a. Find the bound charge densities, ρb and σb as a function of the terms mentioned
and any mathematically known function if required.
b. What is the total bound charge on the surface? Where is the compensating negative
bound charge located?
[Hint: You may calculate the D, E, P for a suitable point]

3. An electron moving in a plane perpendicular to the direction of a uniform magnetic of 0.5 T

undergoes circular motion of radius 2.8mm. What is the speed of the electron?

4. A proton moves in a uniform magnetic field of strength 0.5 T along the x-axis. At the initial
time of recording, t = 0s, the proton has velocity v = 1.95×105 xˆ + 2.00×105 zˆ .
a. What is the acceleration of the proton at the initial time?
b. Is the path circular or helical? Find the radius and if helical calculate the pitch of the
helix. (Pitch is the distance traveled along the helical axis per revolution).

5. A test charge q is moving at an instant through a point with magnetic field B = axxˆ + 2ayyˆ -
4azzˆ with velocity v = v0(3axxˆ - ayyˆ + 2azzˆ). Assuming the units are compatible, find the
electric field E (in terms of the variables stated above) at the point such that the net force
on the test charge is 0.

6. A current I flows to the right through a rectangular bar of

conducting material, in the presence of a uniform
magnetic field B pointing out of the page as in the figure
alongside.
a. If the moving charges are positive, in which direction are they deflected by the
magnetic field?
b. This deflection results in an accumulation of charge on the upper and lower
surfaces of the bar, which in turn produces an electric force to counteract the
magnetic one. Equilibrium occurs when the two exactly cancel. (This phenomenon
is known as the Hall effect.) Find the resulting potential difference between the top
and bottom of the bar, in terms of B, v (the speed of the charges), and the relevant
dimensions of the bar.
c. How would your analysis change if the moving charges were negative?

7. A proton at a distance 10cm from a long straight wire carrying current 1A is moving parallel
to the direction of current flow with a speed 1.8×107m/s. Calculate the force on the proton.

8. Using Biot-Savart law, find the magnetic field at a distance z along the z-axis above the
center of the circular loop of radius R lying in the xy plane, which carries steady current I
running counterclockwise as viewed from the positive z axis (above).

9. Calculate magnetic dipole moment of the loop mentioned in Problem 8 and use that to find
the magnetic dipole potential at points far from the origin. Based on that, find the magnetic
field, approximately, considering the dipole term alone. Finally compare the field on a point
on the z axis at a distance z above the loop and compare it with Problem 8.

10. An electron of charge e is rotating n = 6.8×1015 times per second around the nucleus in a
circular orbit of radius a = 5.1×10-11m. Find the magnetic field at the position of the nucleus.
(You may use results from a previous problem in the Assignment)

11. A current of 32 A is flowing through two parallel straight copper wires of length 20 cm each
separated by a distance of 5 cm. What is the magnitude of the force between the two
wires?

12. Find the magnetic field of a very long solenoid, consisting of n closely wound turns per unit
length on a cylinder of radius R, each carrying a steady current I. [Hint: Use Ampere’s law]

13. Find the magnetic field of an infinite uniform surface current K = K xˆ, flowing over the xy
plane at a distance z perpendicular up the plane.

14. A short circular cylinder of radius a and length L continuous to carry a previously produced
uniform magnetisation M parallel to its axis. Find the bound current and draw the magnetic
field lines of the cylinder for cases L >> a, L << a and L~= a.

15. A current I flows down a long straight wire of radius a. If the wire is made of linear material
with susceptibility χm , and the current is distributed uniformly:
a. What is the magnetic field a distance z from the axis?
b. Find all the bound currents. What is the net bound current flowing down the wire?
