This paper will discuss the cultural practices that have been represented in the ad “The

Homecoming”. It will also describe whether or not these cultural practices are deemed traditional

or contemporary, and it will also point out other messages conveyed by the ad.

The central cultural meaning of the ad is to show how people from different backgrounds

can come together and enjoy a good time drinking beer. The ad takes place in a bar where people

from different races, genders, and ages are drinking together, representing the diversity in

America today. The ad represents the idea of being part of a nation and also the idea of having a

common identity. The ad also shows a Mexican man in a sombrero and a woman in a bikini,

which shows that the people are from different backgrounds.

The obvious message to consume Schaefer beer is that it is an enjoyable and fun

experience to be part of a nation. The slogan of the commercial also represents this because

"Cerveza Schaefer" is the symbol of the Mexican identity.

Another message conveyed in the ad is the importance of the family. When the man

returns home, the family is happy that their son returned safely and is ready to have a great time

together (Comercial para la Televisión de Puerto Rico, 2007). The ad shows the importance of

the love and bond that a family has. The ad also represents the idea of what is a typical family

and how they look like. In the commercial, the man returns to his family to enjoy some time

together, hence representing family value.

Another message is having fun with others. The ad also represents the idea of the

importance of having fun and enjoying moments. In the commercial, a group of people are

enjoying the beer together and having fun. The ad also represents the idea of enjoying moments

together with others. In some places, beer is not only a drink but also an experience to be enjoyed
3

with others. The man in the commercial is enjoying the beer with his mate and the rest of the

people. The group of people are enjoying the beer together and having fun.

The dominant representation of the culture in the ad is fun, enjoyment and enjoyment.

The main character in the ad is enjoying himself and his family. He is also enjoying the beer with

the people in the background. The advertisement creates an idea of having fun and enjoying with

others. As a result of this, beer is associated with fun and enjoyment. The commercial creates a

feeling of being together and having fun. The commercial is saying that beer is the symbol of

having fun and enjoying.

The ad not only appeals to one definition of the culture but also many different

definitions of the culture. This is because the commercial depicts the idea of having fun and

enjoying in many different ways. Even though the commercial is only related to one social

occasion, beer, it can be related to many other occasions. People in the beer society may not

enjoy a beer every day, but they may enjoy it on one of the special occasions. The beer has a

special meaning to the people in that society, but beer may have a different meaning in other

societies. The beer has a meaning to the culture and to the people.

This ad does not corrupt Puerto Rican culture, but it does make a cultural connection to

the people who view it. In the ad is the idea of having fun and enjoying, and this is the

connection to the beer and their society. Although beer is only one of the many things that

represent this society, there is a connection to that society because of the beer.

In conclusion, the ad reinforces traditional values in the Puerto Rican society. When the

commercial is viewed and is a part of the Puerto Rican culture, it reinforces that value by

promoting having fun with other people. The ad does not directly promote beer, but it reinforces
4

what is already a way of life for the people in Puerto Rico. The people who are shown in the

commercial enjoy themselves and are having a good time.
