ABSTRACT

The Coconut milk extractor is a device for extracting the coconut milk from its core.
It typically involves grating the coconut to obtain fine particles, then pressing or
squeezing them to extract milk. These machines can vary in complexity, ranging
from hand-operated ones to electric models that automate the extraction process.
They are in places where coconut milk is a staple ingredient. It sets up the alternative
to the traditional extraction method using hazardous techniques. The proposed project
has the upper hand and is reliable regarding safety and efficiency. The efficiency of a
coconut milk extractor depends on various factors, including the design, power
source, speed, and build quality. It is crucial to follow proper procedures to ensure
that the coconut flesh is prepared adequately before extraction. It helps to enhance
the overall efficiency of the process. This study presents the prototype machine's
fabrication, design, and testing analysis. The study targets the agricultural sectors that
use coconut milk. Also, potential consumers will gain their interest. The study's
primary goal is to create a 2-in-1 machine that includes grating and extracting
processes. The performance of the prototype machine until it reaches its full potential
in terms of effectiveness and efficiency. A prototype machine for extracting coconut
milk can vary depending on its design, engineering, and specific features. User
feedback and real-world testing can provide valuable insights into enhancing the
machine's functionality. The design must be ahead of its competitors at a budget-
friendly price.

INTRODUCTION
The manual process dispenses the operator with both rotations and applies
pressure to scrape out the meat of the coconut fruit (Mendes, B. J. V. 2020). Coconuts
have been scraped in an interchangeable manner for generations. The conventional
method is ineffective. Putting the coconut shell onto a rotating blade is extremely
miniature (Uayan, C. J. A. 2021). The coconut is a versatile crop that provides the
required human amenities. Nearly one-third of the world population is dependent on
coconuts for food consumption and economic needs (Manikantan, M. R. 2016). The
Philippines is one of the world’s largest producers and exporters of coconut products.
The Philippines is the second-largest producer recorded (Working Group: Coconut,
Philippines Partnership for Sustainable Agriculture, 2020). Coconut-based products
have exhibited solid global export growth. The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA)
states that about 3.6 million hectares are planted all over the country, covering the
landscape in 68 out of the 81 provinces. In the past quarter of 2020, the Davao region
was still the top producer of coconuts, with 540.82 thousand metric tons. It is 13.3%
of total coconut production, followed by Northern Mindanao and the Zamboanga

Peninsula at 12.0% and 10.9% shares, respectively (Food Philippines, 2023). As such,
the coconut industry is one of the major derivatives of employment in the country
(Coconut Statistics, Philippine Coconut Authority, 2020). In 2022, the production rate
of coconut in the Philippines amounted to around 14.93 million metric tons, reflecting
an increase from the previous years (Statista Research Department, 2023). Global
demand for coconut milk is anticipated to escalate at a compound annual growth rate
of 6.3% from 2023 to 2033 (Future Market Insights, 2023).

Through observations, researchers noticed a problem regarding the high cost

of coconut extractors with limited functionality that makes some industries turn back
to manual operations, which are time- and effort-consuming and often unsanitary
practices. The objective of sustainable agriculture is to utilize mechanization
technology for faster working duration, efficient food production, and a reduced
workload. One of the agricultural crops that requires modern machinery for more
efficient production is the coconut (Walke et. Al. 2017). Implementing safety
measures can reduce possible accidents and injuries. To reduce the extensive efforts
in the extraction process, devices and energy are necessary (Mohan L. & Tito A.
2019). Machines have fused themselves and taken a prominent role in the industry.
Scraping a coconut and extracting its milk is a laborious and dawdling process
(Issuranga et al., 2022). Grating coconuts has turned out to be a hectic task for people
(Bapat, A.M. et al. 2018). Machines can easily consummate our tasks in a faster and
more efficient way. It provides for the creation of new and advanced industrial
methods and quality products and services. There is a need for the construction of a
coconut milk extractor that will increase the working duration. (Odunlami, S. A. &
Ramonu, O. J. 2017). The quantity of milk extracted was found to be dependent on
the operating speed of an extractor (Olanrewaju, T. 2017). The application of
technology in operations offers a practical and efficient means. As the production rate
increases, so do the profits it yields. The demand for coconut and coconut-derived
products is anticipated to inflate. Providing the coconut milk extracting machine
meets the high expectations of consumers and operators (Hisham, H. K. 2019). New
and advanced technologies bring out a more knowledgeable, competent, and skilled
workforce. It promotes innovation and assists economic progress and development.
Increasing advancement has a tendency to change existing products into improved
ones (Raj et al., 2016). The concern for the integrity of safety remains with all parts of
its preparation and fabrication phases. Coconut scrapers are designed to mitigate the
task of extracting coconut flesh (Khan, A. 2021).

The purpose of this research is to develop and fabricate a coconut milk

extractor machine. Also, to evaluate its functionality, safety features, durability, and
economical approach. The combination of grating and extracting machines can
improve the extraction time and reduce the working efforts of the operator. Two
separate machines are utilized to produce coconut milk (Cercado, 2019). The
improved extractor lessens the workload and ensures the safety of the operator. It is
geared towards the sustainable production of coconut milk and reduces waste weighed
up in the screw press that is currently used in the local market (Castro, 2023).
Demand for coconut products is proliferating globally. Application of technology can
boost the satisfaction rate of users. It will significantly reduce the operator’s labor.
Challenges that are faced by the industries in extracting are salient to be explored for
the advancement of milk extraction technology for efficient downstream processing
(Ng, Y. J. et al., 2021).

The waterfall model is a sequential model of planning, building, and

delivering new products and features. The requirements for any new customer
experience are defined upfront and implemented in discrete phases. Each phase has
specific activities that must be documented and approved before the next phase can
begin. The modified Waterfall model consists of the same phases as the old one but
allows the phases to overlap and break the task into sub-activities (Steve McConnell,
1996). The study employed developmental methods of research. The researchers
used the developmental method to develop a coconut milk extractor. Innovation and
fabrication are applied in the study. The researchers will develop a coconut milk
extractor composed of existing machines, such as grating and extracting machines
combined to form a single product.

Figure 2. Modified Waterfall method

The modified waterfall method retains the sequential nature of the original
model but adds some flexibility by allowing project phases to overlap with the
previous phase. As minor a modification as this is, it introduces much flexibility
because it means that many tasks can function concurrently (Motion Blog, 2023).

The cost analysis was determined to show the total cost spent fabricating one
Coconut Milk Extractor prototype unit. Table 3 shows the actual price of the
materials used in fabricating the Coconut Milk Extractor, which is the amount as per
quantity and specification summed up. Hence, the total cost of one unit of Coconut
Milk Extractor is 9,546.00 pesos, which is recoverable in a short, estimated period
from savings of time and labor. The efficiency of a coconut milk extractor depends
on various factors, including the design, power source, speed, and build quality.
Following proper procedures, such as ensuring the coconut flesh is adequately
prepared before extraction, is also crucial to enhance overall efficiency.

Research Instrument
The study utilized a researcher-made checklist that involves collecting and
analyzing information about the machine's functionality, durability, economical
approach, and safety. The checklists were based on the expert feedback. The
instrument was subjected to content validation and reliability tests to ensure that it
served its purpose in the study.

Validity of the Research Instrument

PAGE \* MERGEFORMAT 22
NORTHERN NEGROS STATE COLLEGE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
College of Education

To validate the research instrument, the researchers presented and asked the
opinions of the validators, who were considered experts. They reviewed the
instrument, which was then validated using the Content Validity Criteria. The three
validators who were considered experts established the research instrument's validity.
The evaluation form was formulated by (Good, C. & Scates, D. 1972). The validators
were requested to check the provided boxes following their preferred sample, and the
scale was the following:

Range Interpretation

4.21 – 5.00 very high validity

3.41 – 4.20 high validity
2.61 – 3.40 moderate validity
1.81 – 2.60 low validity
1.00 – 1.80 very low validity

The researchers sought the validators' honest responses to a provided

checklist. Peter Mark A. Babaylo, Rezil Arcenas, and Malou Grace R. Alacrito opine
that, given the machine evaluation's validity and appropriateness for its intended
purpose, reliability testing is no longer necessary. The responses to the checklist form
yielded a mean rating of 4.6 from the three validators, indicating high validity. This
rating implies that the research instrument developed is suitable and pertinent to the
study's aim. The researchers took into account the reviewers' suggestions and
comments to improve the instrument.

DATA ANALYSIS
The researchers used a 5-point Likert scale to determine the acceptability of
coconut milk extractor through its functionality, durability, economical approach, and
safety features. The researchers conducted the study using a Likert scale survey
checklist. The researchers used the standardized 5-point Likert-Scale instrument
(Likert, R. 1932). The researchers also utilized the Good and Scates validation
instrument to ascertain the validity of the researchers' made checklist (Good, C. &
Scates, D. 1972).

ETHICAL CONSIDERATION
Following ethical considerations, a letter requesting raw materials for the
machine fabrication process was sent to the school administrator's office and the
College of Education Dean (NONESCOST). The materials available from the
Industrial Arts laboratory are needed for the fabrication gathered by the researchers.
A consent paper was signed by authorized personnel on campus. Upon completion,
the researchers carried on security guards before it was brought to the designated shop
outside the school, and as a result of this, it was considered ethical concerning the
school; hence, fabrication was undertaken.

The research adviser firmly checked first the functions of the fabricated
machine. This machine undergoes fabrication considering the design to ensure the
safety operations of the evaluators. In terms of operations, it is essential to provide
the evaluator with clear and comprehensive information about each part and function
of the machine, providing safety precautions to prevent any unexpected injuries. It
ensures that evaluators are fully informed about the machine they are operating

the mean, indicating that the machine's acceptability to users is high. It is
recommended that the prototype machine's performance be tested until it reaches its
full potential in terms of effectiveness and efficiency.

Mechanical and electrical processes can be employed to drive the machine,

ensuring continuous operation, and producing better results. The results affected the
success of the developmental study and helped establish its reputation in the locality.

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Summary of Findings

The coconut milk extractor is designed to extract coconut milk from its core.
The machine uses hazardous processes to set up the alternative to the traditional
extraction method. The performance of the prototype machine can be tested until its
effectiveness and efficiency reach their full potential. Though the machine performs
satisfactorily, further research is warranted to fully understand and improve the
grating and extracting processes of the machine (e.g., motor power, portability).

Conclusion

Given that the structure is currently in its prototype stage, it is reasonable that
the Development of Coconut Milk Extractor can benefit from future improvements
and may prove helpful to subsequent researchers. Nonetheless, it is essential to
conduct a series of operations to test the functionality of the machine and ensure that
it achieves the intended results. Such testing is crucial to identifying any potential
flaws and making any necessary adjustments to the prototype to optimize its
performance.

Recommendations

To ensure optimal performance of a coconut milk extractor, there are various

factors that need to be considered, such as the design, power source, speed, and build
quality. The efficiency of the machine depends on both mechanical and electrical
processes that drive it, allowing for continuous operation and better results.
Additionally, it's crucial to ensure that the machine is properly aligned and secured,
with the angle of the PVC tube from the grating machine to the cylinder being at least
45 degrees. The cylinder's position should be elevated to meet the exact slope where

the coconut granules transfer, and the grater blades should be refined in size to scrape
most of the coconut meat. By taking these considerations into account, you can
improve the efficiency of your coconut milk extractor and produce high-quality
coconut milk.
