SEMESTER 1 PUBLISHED BY THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION AND CULTURE
OF INDONESIA
ABSTRACT
The title of “The Readibility Level of Reading Texts in the English Textbook Entitled
Bahasa Inggris SMA/MA/MAK For Grade XI Semester 1 Published By The Ministry Of
Education and Culture of Indonesia” is taken because predicting readability level of reading
texts can help the teachers to match the texts with students‟ grade. The appropriate reading
text is expected to ease the students in comprehending the material.
The purpose of this study is to know the readability level and students perception of
reading texts in English language textbooks used by the eleventh grade semester 1 in the year
2014. This research used descriptive approach to analyze the data. The reading texts were
taken from English language textbooks; “Bahasa Inggris SMA/MA/MAK For Grade XI
Semester 1” published by the Ministry of Education and Culture of Indonesia (originally
published in the form of electronic book). Five texts (Narrative,descriptive and spoof) and 30
students are selected as research subject. All of selected texts are analyzed using Flesch
Reading Ease formula. Then, the questionnaire given to the respondents that has been
randomly selected.
The Flesch Reading Ease Formula show the texts are standard with score 69.392. It
means that reading texts are appropriate for eleventh grade students. However, the
questionnaire found that the reading texts in “Bahasa Inggris SMA/MA/MAK For Grade XI
Semester 1” are difficult to read by the respondents. In short, the result between Flesch
Reading Ease Formula calculation is different with students‟ opinion as the book user.
Therefore, the teacher should give more guidance in reading session.

ABSTRAK
Judul skripsi “Tingkat Keterbacaan Teks Bacaan Pada Buku Bahasa Inggris
SMA/MA/MAK For Grade XI Semester 1”yang diterbitkan oleh Kementerian Pendidikan Dan
Kebudayaan Indonesia” dipilih dengan alasan memprediksi tingkat keterbacaan teks dapat
membantu guru untuk menyesuaikan teks dengan tingkatan siswa. Teks bacaan yang sesuai
diharapkan dapat mempermudah siswa dalam memahami materi.
Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui tingkat keterbacaan teks dan persepsi
siswa terhadap teks bacaan dalam buku bahasa Inggris yang digunakan oleh siswa kelas
sebelas semester 1 pada tahun 2014. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan deskriptif untuk
menganalisa data yang ada. Teks bacaan diambil dari buku bahasa Inggris; “Bahasa Inggris
SMA/MA/MAK for Grade XI Semester 1” yang diterbitkan oleh Kementerian Pendidikan
dan Kebudayaan Indonesia (awalnya diterbitkan dalam format buku elektronik). Lima teks
(naratif, deskriptif dan anekdot) dan 30 siswa dipilih sebagai subjek penelitian. Semua teks
yang telah dipilih kemudian dianalisa dengan menggunakan formula Flesch Reading Ease.
Kemudian angket diberikan kepada 30 siswa yang telah dipilih secara acak.
Hasil analisis formula menunjukkan bahwa teks bacaan berada pada level standar
dengan skor 69.392. Skor itu menunjukkan bahwa bacaan-bacaan tersebut cocok untuk siswa
kelas sebelas. Namun hasil temuan instrumen angket menyatakan bahwa teks bacaan pada
buku “Bahasa Inggris SMA/MA/MAK for Grade XI Semester 1 dinilai sulit untuk dibaca oleh
responden. Singkatnya, hasil kalkulasi menggunakan formula Flesch Reading Ease berbeda
dengan pendapat siswa sebagai subjek pengguna buku. Oleh karenanya, guru harus banyak
memberikan bimbingan pada sesi membaca.
