APPENDIX A

To achieve high operating reliability for Variax fans


under all operating conditions Howden has When calculating the transient air gap torques
developed a design program. Howden uses the following equations in the dynamic
torque analysis.
This program deals with the transient air gap torques
of the motor in a dynamic torque analysis which
makes it possible to determine the size of associated Start-up:
torques occurring in coupling and bearing assembly -t/T1
as the analysis determines the damping of the M(t) = CM1  e  sin( t) (Nm)
transmission elements.
Two-phase short circuit:
Due to insufficient motor data this calculation
normally cannot be carried out at the quotation stage M(t) = CM e  -t/T2

 sin( t) - 0.5 e -t/T2' sin(2t) (Nm)
as a correct selection of elements for the rotating
system requires correct motor data and basis of Three-phase short circuit:
calculation. -t/T3
M(t) = CM3  e  sin( t) (Nm)

Howden recommends the dynamic torque analysis Mains switching:


instead of the static one where the transmission -t/T4
elements for the full motor torques are laid down, M(t) = CM4  e  sin( t) (Nm)
irrespective of the damping of the transmission
elements. This will often make the selection of where the following time constants are used:
suitable components impossible.
T1 = 0.6 s
The motor torques wanted on page 2 are described T2 = 0.11 s
below: T2' = 0.035 s
T3 = 0.04 s
M1 = normal torque of motor. The torque is normally
generated by the operating speed of the motor. T4 = 0.03 s
  2    f , f = mains frequency
M2 = static starting torque of motor. This torque is
normally generated by the motor at start-up. Is
also referred to as locked rotor torque. Factors CM1 to CM4 denote the amplitude value of
the transient air gap torques stated on page 2.
M3 = dynamic starting torque of motor. This
oscillating torque occurs during start-up of
motor.

M4 = tilting torque of motor. This maximum torque is


generated by the motor.

M5 = transient torque occurring in the motor at two-


or three-phase short circuit and mains
switching respectively. For further information,
please see "Fast Buss Transfer Torques".
