Task 3 Memo

The document presents a case study about a sports club that collects data on members' ages and preferred sports. A chi-square test is conducted to determine if there is a relationship between members' ages and their choice of tennis or swimming. The results of the chi-square test show a significant relationship, indicating member age and sport preference are not independent. Members aged 26-30 were more likely to play tennis and less likely to swim compared to other age groups.

Research Practical Task 3

Read the case study below and answer the questions related to it. This is the 3rd and final
practical submission for this course. This submission is due on the 29th of August at 11:30pm.

Case:

A manager of a sports club keeps information concerning the main sport in which members

participate and their ages. To test whether there is a relationship between the age of a member

and his or her choice of sport, 370 members of the sports club are randomly selected. Conduct

a chi-square test of independence to determine if a relationship exists between the age of gym

member and sporting event.

Sport 18 - 25 26 - 30 31 - 40
tennis 58 76 39 173
swimming 72 60 65 197
130 136 104 370

2.1 Explain the criteria for determining the appropriateness of using the chi-square test.
(4)
The chi-square statistic is appropriate for frequency problems.
It is used when dealing with categorical data.
Used in large scale surveys where data in the form of counts are used.
Used to determine whether a relationship exists between two categorical variables.

2.2 Using the information in the table and the formula below determine whether a

systematic relationship exists between the age of gym member and sporting event, the

critical value is 5.99. Remember to show all calculations.

Cramer’s V = √ (X²/N(L-1))
√ (8.37/370(2-1))
= 0.150

2.3 Interpret and explain (in relation to the nature, magnitude and significance) what we can

infer from the data/scores displayed in your contingency table and the obtained chi-score.

(6)
A chi-square test was conducted to test if there was a relationship between age and the type
of sport gym attendees participated in. The results were significant X2 (2) = 8.37, (p < .05),
which is more than the critical value of 5.99 suggesting that the relationship between age-
group and the type of gym activity (swimming or tennis) was not random. The results show
that the biggest difference in preference between gym activity is for the age group 26-30
years who were more likely to engage in playing tennis than the other age groups and less
likely to swim than the other age groups.
